Argenis Mendez: record, next fight and profile →
Less than a year after falling just short in his first major title bid, Argenis Mendez is now one fight away from redemption. Terms have been reached between the Mendez camp and unbeaten contender Guillaume Frenois of France to square off in a sanctioned 130 lb. title elimination bout. The fight will take place on July 21 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Lightweight contender Argenis Méndez will face the Mexican Héctor Velásquez in the main event of the card “D-Day II Dominican Dominations” at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino of Hollywood, Florida on Friday May 18th.
Dominican super featherweight Argenis Méndez is training hard. He returns in the main event of the “D-Day II Dominican Dominations” card - being presented by promoter Henry Rivalta from Acquinity Sports on May 18th at the Seminole Hard Rock of Hollywood, Florida. On Wednesday he took part in a hard six round sparring session with Cuban boxer Angelo Santana at the gym of trainer German Caicedo in Miami.
Lightweight contender Argenis Mendez (19-2, 10KOs) has an opponent for his televised main event on ESPN. He will face tough Mexican contender Leonilo Miranda (32-4, 30KOs). In his last fight, Miranda went the eight round distance with Gary Russell Jr. last September. Mendez comes back from a two round TKO win over Alex Perez in October. ESPN will televise the fight as part of their Friday Night Fights series, from the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Olympic gold medal winner Felix Diaz is also slated for the card.
Argenis Mendez has been forced to overcome quite a bit of bad news in recent months. The Dominican contender has endured such a hard-luck run, that even good news comes with a twist these days.
Executives from Acquinity Sports visited the Dominican Republic in March and secured three big hitters for their company - including light heavyweight prospect Lenin Castillo 5-0-0 (3 KO's), top lightweight contender Argenis Mendez 19-2-0 (10 KO's) and welterweight Olympian Felix Diaz 10-0-0 (6 KO's)
NEW YORK - DiBella Entertainment has announced a solid undercard supporting the Sergio Martinez vs. Matthew Macklin card, entitled "THE REAL Middleweight Championship - Get Your Irish Up", on March 17 (St. Patrick's Day), in The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
This past December saw former lightweight titlist Brandon ‘Bam Bam’ Rios lose his cherished WBA crown, yet it wasn’t solely because of the opponent he was set to face. Then prepping for the second defense of his belt against the United Kingdom's John Murray, Rios would come in .6 pounds overweight in trying to make the lightweight limit of 135 pounds, with subsequent attempts also proving to be off the mark. Rios would lose his title on the scales and while he would end up pounding out Murray one night later for an 11th round TKO, his future suddenly became cloudy.
On the heels of his first fight in three years in his native Dominican Republic, 130 lb. contender Argenis Mendez is anxious to return to the title picture. The 25-year old wound up being matched softer than expected, scoring a second round stoppage over very late sub Alex Perez after Mendez saw two previous opponents pull out in the span of two weeks.
On a night when both fighters desperately needed a win worth talking about, Joan Guzman and Argenis Mendez both delivered in uncharacteristically quick fashion Friday evening in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Former two-division champion Guzman needed less than a round to dispose of Florencio Castellano in the evening’s main event, while Mendez blasted out late replacement Alex Perez of Cuba in just two rounds.
