Andy Ruiz wants to get back to having a busy boxing schedule.

The former champion from California noted in a recent interview that he is at his best when he is active and insisted that he is looking to fight twice before the end of the year.

Ruiz (34-2, 22 KOs) is currently scheduled to square off against Luis Ortiz (33-2, 28 KOs) Sept. 4 at crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Fox Pay-Per-View.

“God willing, as you said, if I have no injuries and I win this fight good, probably the end of this year because that would be perfect,” Ruiz said on The Good Fight with Kate Abdo.

Ruiz explained that he wants a quick turnaround time because he believes he benefits from fighting more frequently. Ruiz has been relatively inactive since his two fights with Anthony Joshua in 2019. Ruiz upset Joshua in the first meeting with a fifth round stoppage to pick up three of the four major heavyweight belts. He lost them, however, in the rematch six months later, when Joshua won a unanimous 12-round decision in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia.

Since then, Ruiz has only fought once, a 12-round decision over Chris Arreola last year.

Ruiz said he appreciated it when he got the nod to face Joshua because he had fought just two months prior, a fifth-round stoppage of Alexander Dimitrenko.

“Yes, because I need to stay busy, I need to stay active,” Ruiz said. “That’s exactly how I’m going to do better. When I fought Anthony Joshua, I’d just come out of a fight and, boom, I jumped to another fight. I already felt good. I already felt explosive. I felt like I was still in training camp. I feel it’s really important to stay busy.”

Ruiz said he would “like” to have a rubber match with Joshua.

“I feel we should have a trilogy,” Ruiz said. “Who doesn’t have a trilogy? There should always be a trilogy. I won him, he won me, there should always be the third fight. But things happen for a reason. Usyk beat him. Now he has to do the rematch and what if Joshua wins? He has to do two different trilogies, like, what the heck.

“But of course I would like to fight Anthony Joshua. But that’s all up to him. If not, there are so many other different heavyweights out there that are ready to fight.”
