It’s a sad state of affairs when fair scoring is celebrated in the sport, but such is the boxing world in which we live. Amnat Ruenroeng was properly compensated for the boxing lesson he handed Zou Shiming, earning a 12-round decision Saturday evening at Cotai Arena in Macau, China. The night was unlike his trip to Japan last May, where Ruenroeng boxed circles around Kazuto Ioka but was forced to settle for a split decision. Shiming never offered enough to justify the judges even thinking about making the fight any closer than it actually was.

The bell rings and the man across the ring gets his say as to whether or not those extras can be maximized and monetized. All that matters then is what can be delivered. This weekend, two fighters with bigger star potential get the toughest tests of their professional careers. One is the centerpiece of an emerging boxing market, a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist brought along quickly and carefully to a calculated gamble. The other is a loquacious boxer/puncher granted the first prime time network television main event platform in a generation. They will determine how much they matter going forward. Boxer Amnat Ruenroeng is expected to win the best professional athlete award from the Sports Writers Association of Thailand next month. The 34-year-old, who is scheduled to fight China's Zou Shiming in the defence of his IBF flyweight title in Macau on March 7, is tipped to beat both golfer Thongchai Jaidee and WBC minimumweight champion Wanheng Meenayothin for the prestigious award thanks to his brilliant performance last year.

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach says China's Zou Shiming must forget everything he thinks he knows about Amnat Ruenroeng if he wants to seize the Thai's flyweight world title next month. Zou, a two-time Olympic champion and three-time world champion in an illustrious amateur career, will be challenging for a professional world title in just his seventh pro bout on March 7, when he takes on International Boxing Federation champ Amnat in Macau. The two met three times as amateurs, Amnat winning their first contest and Zou triumphing in the next two. Roach said those wins will mean nothing come March.
