Alex Arthur: record, next fight and profile →
GLASGOW, Scotland – Alex Arthur Jnr, who is trained by his father, former IBF super featherweight champion Alex Arthur Snr, picked up the second win of his professional career at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena.
GLASGOW, Scotland – Debutant Alex Arthur Jnr, son of Scottish star Alex Arthur, a former WBO champion at junior lightweight, opened his career at light heavyweight. He defeated London’s Robbie Chapman, 13-50-9 (2 KOs), over four rounds by 40-36.
You might say it was preordained for Arthur Jnr to become a fighter, but it is not the path his father would have chosen for him. Yet "Young Alex" turns pro at the Hydro in Glasgow on Saturday.
Former EBU champion Alex Arthur is backing Josh Taylor to win in impressive fashion this coming Saturday night in Las Vegas. Taylor is scheduled to face Jose Ramirez in a battle of unbeatens - with the WBO, IBF, WBA, WBC junior welterweight titles at stake.
Arthur's Gym, based in Rhydyfelin, has been shortlisted in this year's prestigious National Lottery Awards which is broadcast on national television. The National Lottery Awards reward and recognise the inspirational impact of National Lottery funded projects across all sections of society. National Lottery players raise more than £35 million for good causes throughout the UK every week. Over 900 good causes from across the UK were nominated in this year's Awards. Arthur's Gym has made it through to the final seven in the Best Sport Project category, with a coveted National Lottery Awards trophy and a £2,000 cash prize up for grabs if they get the highest number of public votes in their category.
Scottish boxer Alex Arthur has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 35. The former WBO world super-featherweight and Commonwealth champion confirmed the news to his Twitter followers. The Edinburgh fighter boasted a record of 31 wins and just three defeats in his career. Arthur tweeted: "Well... Woke up 35 today. Time goes so fast, I have never fought for over a year now so just want to say I officially retire from boxing today!" Arthur also had a sucessful career as an amateur, securing gold in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur before winning belts at British, Commonwealth, European and World super-featherweight levels after turning to the professional game in 2000.
The original estimate for attendance was 150 people but the response from the local community shocked Arthur’s Gym and there were 300 people through the doors by the end of the night. Arthur said: “The turn-out was fantastic, it was twice the size we expected. The whole point of it was to give the boxers a chance to fight in front of their families, friends and fans because a lot of them didn’t have that chance before. “This was the last show of the season, normally shows tailor off at this point in the calendar but demand was high for this. So, we’re thinking of doing another one when the next season gets started in September.”
Former world champion Alex Arthur believes WBO lightweight king Ricky Burns (35-2, 10KOs) needs bigger fights. He says the previously scheduled matches with Jose Ocampo, and Liam Walsh, were below the proper standards of who the champion should be fighting.
Promoter Dave Coldwell has set the ball rolling in negotiations for a non-title fight between Curtis Woodhouse, the English light-welterweight champion, and Alex Arthur, the former WBO super-featherweight champion. Woodhouse won his domestic title against Dave Ryan in September, and Coldwell is eager to keep his charge active, although he admits a deal is still up in the air. “I spoke to Arthur at the weekend about the fight but he thinks he might have another fight planned. If not, I’m sure he’ll accept,” said Coldwell. “I’ve fancied the fight for a while and I think Curtis can win.”
When talking to Alex Arthur I couldn’t help but get an image of the hitchhiker looking to get a lift into the Promised Land. Passers by take a glance, smile and then realise who it is and speed on past. The former world champion may be ready for one last tilt at the big time but no one is signing up for it quite yet. At 34-years-old and sitting in the 140lb division Arthur is certainly talking the right game as well as looking the healthiest and strongest that he has arguably ever been. But with the offers of fights slim and none the Scot is ready to take matters into his own hands.
