FOX’s viewership dipped Saturday night from the network’s preceding boxing broadcast a week earlier. Nielsen Media Research reported Tuesday that the main event of that telecast – Erislandy Lara’s relatively easy, 12-round victory over huge underdog Greg Vendetti – averaged 1,042,000 viewers and attracted a peak audience of 1,067,000. FOX’s main event August 22 – Shawn Porter’s lopsided points defeat of Sebastian Formella in a 12-rounder – was watched by an average audience of 1,077,000 and drew a peak viewership of 1,225,000.
Luis Arcon caught Abram Martinez with the type of punch he needed with just a few seconds left in their eight-round junior welterweight fight Saturday night. Arcon’s knockdown very late in their bout was the difference between the unbeaten Venezuelan prospect suffering his first defeat and earning a split draw on the scorecards in a fight FOX aired as part of the Erislandy Lara-Greg Vendetti undercard from Microsoft Theater. Judge Steve Morrow scored Arcon a 76-74 winner, but Pat Russell credited Martinez for a 76-74 victory and Edward Hernandez Sr. scored the action even (75-75).
The time spent at the scale wasn’t nearly as dramatic as the mid-morning drama preceding the official weigh-in. Erislandy Lara and Greg Vendetti both easily made weight for their 12-round junior middleweight main event, which airs live Saturday evening from Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. Their bout tops a televised tripleheader live in primetime on Fox, beginning at 8:00pm ET.
