The bout - which aired live on SAT1 – registered more than 4 million viewers on Saturday evening. The network confirmed the news overnight, referring to the result as “[w]orld class: Arthur Abraham brings with title defense against Paul Smith strong 15.0% market share.”

The Liverpudlian went down to a controversial loss to Abraham in September in a fight that seemed close to all observers but the judges who awarded the decision overwhelmingly to the German.

O2 Arena, Berlin, Germany- Cruiserweight Noel Gevor opened Sauerland Event´s big show at the O2 Arena and moved to 16-0 with a unanimous eight round decision over tough Argentinian Alejandro Emilio Valori (16-7). It was hard fought all the way. Valori was in Gevor´s face all fight long forcing his opponent to fight off the ropes in most rounds. Gevor was a little too sharp though and the best punches came from him. Valori slipped on the canvas in the seventh and Gevor hurt him moments later with a left hook to the body and the Argentinian tired badly after that, but gave Noel a good learning fight. It was scored 78-74 on all cards at the end.

Leave it to the judges turn a close but clear fight into a matter of controversy that launched an investigation, and thus spawned a rematch. So goes the fate for Arthur Abraham and Paul Smith, who collide Saturday evening in Berlin, Germany. The bout comes five months after their first meet, when Abraham was awarded a decision scored much wider than the action in the ring suggested. Prior to the end of the 12th and final round, the biggest surprise of the night was that Smith put up a shockingly competitive fight. Most observers figured the fight to be little more than a cash-out opportunity for the traveling Brit, who turned 31 shortly after the fight. Smith delivered arguably the most convincing performance of his career through 10 rounds, before allowing Abraham to surge ahead late in the fight to secure a victory. The consensus seemed to be that the late rally by the defending super middleweight titlist was enough to pull out the win, or at least level up the scorecards. It turned out that he could’ve stayed still for the final six minutes and still won the fight, as the wide scores suggested. With that, we arrive to fight night Saturday evening in Berlin, Germany.

Boxing has had plenty of rivalries over the years: big name fighter versus big name fighter, promoter against promoter and, more recently, hard-core against so-called casual fans. For years, though, the TV battle has been a largely one-way affair due to Sky TV’s financial clout. Since dipping into the sport in the 1990s, Sky has been able to attract, and in some cases keep, the best promoters, stables and fighters to their platform whilst the terrestrial channels either made do with what Sky didn’t want or attracted promoters over to them as a response to Sky’s policies. For example, Frank Warren moved back to ITV in 2005 and took his stable, which included Joe Calzaghe, with him citing Sky’s preference for Premiership Football and their decision to move their Fight Night show to Fridays as the cause.
