SANTA MONICA, California – Canelo Alvarez announced two weeks ago that he plans to return to the ring September 15. The suspended superstar didn’t mention Gennady Golovkin by name, but it has been presumed that Alvarez wants to reschedule his middleweight championship rematch against Golovkin for that date. Golovkin and his trainer, Abel Sanchez, aren’t so sure anymore.
Abel Sanchez isn’t only completely confident Gennady Golovkin will beat Vanes Martirosyan. Golovkin’s veteran trainer also is certain Martirosyan will leave the ring Saturday night like many of Golovkin’s previous opponents – not quite the same as when he stepped into it. Sanchez didn’t go quite as far as to predict Golovkin will become the first fighter to knock out Martirosyan, but he expects their scheduled 12-round middleweight title fight to amount to a rough night for the huge underdog in Carson, California.
If Gennady Golovkin beats Vanes Martirosyan on Saturday night, he’ll tie Bernard Hopkins’ middleweight record by making a 20th consecutive defense of one of his 160-pound titles. The potential tie notwithstanding, Golovkin thinks his reign is more impressive than Hopkins’ 10-year run as a middleweight champion. The unbeaten Golovkin said during a conference call Monday that his record is “much stronger” than Hopkins’ resume when the Philadelphia native was a middleweight champ.
Abel Sanchez wasn’t the least bit impressed with how Daniel Jacobs fought Saturday night. Gennady Golovkin’s trainer thinks Jacobs “looked terrible” during his 12-round victory over Maciej Sulecki. Sanchez attributes Jacobs’ slippage to going 12 hard rounds against Golovkin in their middleweight title fight 13 months ago at Madison Square Garden.

Gennady Golovkin and his trainer, Abel Sanchez, took shots at Canelo Alvarez’s performance-enhancing drug ordeal in a Jordan Brand commercial released Tuesday. The 40-second commercial opens with Sanchez seated at a table, eating a steak. Sanchez states, “Superhuman power requires a special ingredient.”
Gennady Golovkin is growing frustrated with boxing’s sanctioning bodies while he struggles to find a replacement opponent for Canelo Alvarez on May 5. Golovkin and his promoter and trainer appeared in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday to announce they still haven’t found a suitable replacement, and time is running out.
The cruiserweight division is red hot at the moment. While the division hasn't ever really been very popular in the United States, it is brimming with talent and that talent has been on display in the World Boxing Super Series. WBA/IBF champion Murat Gassiev and WBC/WBO champion Oleksandr Usyk face each other in the finals that is tentatively scheduled to take place in Jeddah, Saudia Arabia on May 11th. All four major belts will be on the line and in addition to being the tournament winner, the victor will also become the undisputed cruiserweight champion.

WBA/IBF cruiserweight champion Murat Gassiev (26-0) is scheduled to face Oleksandr Usyk (14-0) in the finals of the World Boxing Super Series on May 11th in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
This weekend, veteran trainer Abel Sanchez was in France with Michel Soro (who defeated John Vera over 12 rounds for the interim WBA 154-pound title) but as he gets back to the Summit in Big Bear this upcoming week, for him it will be business as usual for him and Gennady Golovkin - even with Saul Alvarez being temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for testing positive for clenbuterol.
