Abdullah Mason: Young, Unbeaten and Focused on Saturday’s Task at Hand

Even at 92 years old and having spent parts of seven decades in boxing, Bob Arum arrives at ringside in time for the first fight on his promotional company’s undercards. The Top Rank Inc. founder, oftentimes in essentially empty venues, enjoys watching his prospects progress during the developmental phases of their careers. None of them have intrigued Arum more over the past couple years than Abdullah Mason.

If you took a look at the resume of Emiliano Vargas, you’d be hard-pressed to find any recognizable names. Chastisement isn’t called for, however. Simply put, he’s slowly making his way up the lightweight ladder. This Friday night, he’ll take another small step in the right direction.

One of boxing’s best prospects produced another tantalizing victory Thursday in Las Vegas. Abdullah Mason scored two knockdowns and knocked out Benjamin Gurment in the second round of their scheduled eight-round bout on the Teofimo Lopez-Jamaine Ortiz undercard at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino’s Michelob ULTRA Arena. The 19-year-old lightweight from Cleveland displayed diverse offensive skills during their brief bout, improved to 12-0 and produced his 10th knockout.

Jamaine Ortiz flexed his muscles, smiled and beat his chest Wednesday afternoon after he made weight in Las Vegas. Teofimo Lopez mostly smiled as they faced off for the final time before their 140-pound title fight Thursday night. Minutes earlier, Lopez and Ortiz weighed exactly the same amount, 139.6 pounds, when they stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale.

What were you doing at 19 years of age? Maybe you were fresh out of high school. Some were attempting to get adjusted to life in college. There’s also a good chance that some were simply hanging out with friends doing their best to figure out what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives. In the case of Abdullah Mason, he spends his time beating up grown men and getting paid for it.

Teofimo Lopez will defend his WBO title against Jamaine Ortiz on Thursday, Feb. 8, at Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Lopez-Ortiz headlines an action-packed televised doubleheader that kicks off Big Game Weekend.

By Keith Idec - Ernesto “Tito” Mercado has taken an unconventional path toward building his 13-0 record. Mercado works without a major promoter, which has cost the 22-year-old knockout artist the type of exposure prospects typically receive during the developmental phase of their careers. The junior welterweight has instead performed off TV, on cards promoted by the company owned by his father and trainer, Nato, at LumColor Phoenix Center, a small venue in Ontario, California.

It’s graduation day for Abdullah Mason. For the 19-year-old lightweight, he’s viewed as one of the best prospects the sport of boxing has to offer. In a day and age where activity is a rarity, Mason managed to enter the ring on five different occasions. Despite his level of opposition rising, Mason’s game rose along with it.
