The man widely regarded as the greatest Mexican fighter of all-time, Julio Cesar Chavez, believes Gennady Golovkin deserves the opportunity of a third fight with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez.

Canelo and Golovkin fought to a controversial draw in September 2017 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. A year later, at the same venue, Canelo won a close twelve round majority decision.

DAZN, the streaming service that contractually has both boxers under their banner, tried their best to make a trilogy fight in 2019 - but Canelo expressed absolutely no interest in a third bout with GGG.

Since their second meeting, Golovkin has remained in the middleweight division and captured the IBF title.

Canelo has since moved on to higher weights - by capturing the WBA "regular" title at super middleweight. And last November he even moved up to light heavyweight and knocked out Sergey Kovalev for the WBO world title.

Canelo has since vacated the WBO belt and intends to fight again in May, during Cinco De Mayo weekend, and it appears more likely that he will fight again at 168.

Chavez believes the first two bouts could have gone either way, but based on their recent performances he believes Canelo is now more capable of knocking out Golovkin.

"Triple G deserves the third fight, because if you saw both fights, you didn't see Canelo win comfortably. I'm honest, I think the two fights could have gone either way. He deserves a third fight so that he could really define who has been better," Chavez told Izquierdazo.

"Logically, Canelo has evolved a lot [since their first two fights]. I think Canelo now has more of an opportunity [to win more clearly], now he can knock him out. Canelo has the opportunity to show that he is better than Golovkin."
