Given his style and personality, many have often referred to Adrien Broner as trying to follow in the footsteps of Floyd Mayweather. And now that Marcos Maidana has beaten up Broner and taken his welterweight world title, one question raised immediately afterward is whether Maidana could go on to face Mayweather.

Mayweather’s likely soon to announce his next bout, which is expected to take place in May. It’s presumed that his opponent will be former 140-pound titleholder Amir Khan. No official announcement has been made, however.

Asked about a Mayweather-Maidana fight, Schaefer responded:

“I think that’s definitely a fight that eventually could happen. I think it could be an exciting fight,” Schaefer said. “Broner is a very slick boxer, one of the best boxers in the sport. Marcos Maidana was not intimidated by skills one bit and was just not going to be denied.”

But Schaefer later added this:

“I wouldn’t say that because of one fight that you have suddenly — I mean, he definitely is a name which will be in the mix. We’ll have to see. I’ll talk to Floyd and his team. But this was an amazing performance against a very game Adrien Broner, who didn’t give up even though he was hurt early on. It just shows you, Marcos Maidana is special. We all want to see the guy.”
