Hearn Wants Khan vs. Brook - Even on Amir's Terms

•Dec 12, 2014

Amir Khan will be hoping a win over Devon Alexander this weekend can land him a shot at Floyd Mayweather, but leading promoter Eddie Hearn has told him the smart money is in a domestic grudge clash with Kell Brook. Khan fights in Las Vegas against Alexander - a man Brook was meant to fight for a world title three times, only for both men to withdraw with injuries. No world strap is on the line on Saturday - Alexander lost to Shawn Porter who Brook then beat in August - but the winner could be in a line to face unbeaten American Mayweather next year.

Mentally, I wasn’t there. I was just not using my skills in that fight. Mentally, I just wasn’t there.”

Amir Khan (29-3, 19KOs) was first scheduled to face Devon Alexander (26-2, 14KOs) a year ago. Back then, Alexander held the IBF's welterweight title. When Khan fell out of the fight, the British star was replaced by Shawn Porter who scored an upset decision win over Alexander. Khan intentionally withdrew, because the fighter was made to believe that he was receiving the opportunity to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May of this year. That didn't happen. Mayweather declined to face Khan and instead selected Marcos Maidana. Khan fought on the undercard of the May show, making his welterweight debut with an impressive win over former champion Luis Collazo.

Alexander says Amir Khan's style is "nothing special" and will play right into his hands at the weekend. The two welterweights top the bill at Las Vegas' MGM Grand this weekend, live on Sky Sports, and much of the preamble back in the United Kingdom has been about Khan's resurgence and which super-fight might come next. But Alexander is a former two-weight world champion in his own right, and the American is convinced he can halt Khan's march towards that same achievement come fight night.

In a recent article on BoxingScene.com, Khan stated that his struggles to make weight in the lower weight divisions played a role in getting hurt and dropped in several of his past fights at 135 and 140. Khan will face Alexander in a Showtime televised fight on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
