Golovkin Wants Andre Ward, Chavez Jr. in The Future
By Ryan Burton
WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin is currently in the final stages of his training camp for his June 29th fight against Mathew Macklin.
While the fight against Macklin is a dangerous one, boxing fans and insiders alike can't help but speculate on potential match ups against some of the biggest names in the middleweight and super middleweight divisions. You can count Golovkin himself amongst those who wonder how he would fare against the elite names around his weight class.
"Absolutely. Right now my focus is on middleweight but in the future why not? Andre Ward is one of the best in the sport. I think the fight is great for everybody. Not just for the fans but for the whole sport. I work with HBO now and I am open to fights with everybody. Some guys are on Showtime so that could be a problem. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is a big guy. I would like to fight him in the future or anybody else but right now I'm focused on Macklin," Golovkin told BoxingScene.com.
Golovkin's fight against Macklin will be the main event of an HBO televised tripleheader. The knockout artist didn't want to give a prediction for his fight but promised that it would be a fun fight.
"I think it will be a great fight. I think there will be big drama. I don't know for who (laughing), but there will be big drama. Make sure you tune in," Golovkin stated.
The top MWs won't fight Golovkin. You can't have a run like Wlad if the opponents in the division refuse to fight you and you're not a big enough star for HBO to sign off on weaker opponents.
…Comment by Weebler I on 06-19-2013
As great as a potential win over Ward would be for GGG..... I see no reason why he should move up to do that yet. He has the potential to run 160 and completely clean house and own the division…Comment by King_ on 06-19-2013
No way 3G gives Chavez Jr. the edge by giving him a catch weight. As soon as his contract with HBO is up he's going after Canelo and Kid Chocolate.
Golovkin is willing to fight anyone from 154 to 175…Post a Comment - View More User Comments (62)
