Golovkin's power advantage was clear in the first round as he pushed Macklin back with every punch. Macklin looked to be in survival mode by the second round and suffered a cut above his left eye. In the third round, Macklin tried to rally, throwing punches with both hands to get Golovkin's respect but he was crushed with a huge shot to the body as he was pressed against the ropes and went down hard for the full count.

by Cliff Rold - The camp of lineal Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez has pointed out how light the resume of their perceived most dangerous contender has been. It’s not just perception anymore. 31-year old WBA Middleweight beltholder Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO) of Kazakhstan made his eighth title defense a statement on Saturday night at the MGM Grand at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut, dominating and stopping 31-year old veteran contender Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO) of Birmingham, West Midlands in the United Kingdom with a body shot in the third round. With the win, the best of his career to date, the former Olympic Silver Medalist Golovkin cleared a big hurdle towards the goal of getting the reigning Middleweight king in the ring. Martinez is currently rehabbing from injury. By the time he returns, the chorus demanding he face the man likely to be seen as his heir apparent could be deafening. The engaging Macklin wasted little time taking the fight to Golovkin before wisely attempting to mix in some movement. Tying up Golovkin in close, Macklin appeared to have a sound strategy in place. With just less than a minute to go, Golovkin tore those plans asunder with a rattling right hand. Macklin stayed on his feet as he took more power shots down the stretch, most of them singular and each playing with his legs.

Foxwoods, Conn. -- Undefeated German middleweight Gennady Golovkin stopped English challenger Matthew Macklin in the third round Saturday night to successfully defend his WBA and IBO titles. Golovkin improved to 27-0 with his 24th knockout and 14th in a row, using a left hand to the body to flatten Macklin (29-5) 1:22 into the third. Golovkin dominated the first two rounds, landing several hard combinations. Golovkin has made five successful title defenses and hasn't gone the distance in a fight since June 2008 against Amar Amari in an eight-round bout. Macklin has lost three of his last four fights. He lost a split decision to Felix Sturm in June 2011 for the WBA super middleweight crown, and dropped another title shot in March 2012 to Sergio Martinez.

Tonight's main event will not last too long, according to Abel Sanchez, trainer of WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23KOs). The two beltholder will face dangerous Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20KOs) at Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Sanchez expects the fight to last no more than five rounds, with Macklin taking a terrible beating, which forces his trainer Buddy McGirt to save him from punishment by throwing in the towel.

NEW YORK — As a former executive for HBO Sports, promoter Lou DiBella has a unique understanding of what it takes to carefully construct a talented fighter into a star. DiBella realizes exactly why current HBO Sports executives have matched Gennady Golovkin against Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KOs, 1 NC) and Grzegorz Proska (29-3, 21 KOs), the fighters the hard-hitting Golovkin (26-0, 23 KOs) has stopped in his first two appearances on the premium cable network. DiBella doesn’t believe, however, that boxing enthusiasts should view Golovkin as an unbeatable beast until he shows he is capable of defeating a big, strong, legitimate middleweight like Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KOs), his opponent Saturday night in the main event of an HBO tripleheader (9:45 p.m. ET) from Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.
