  • Is Floyd Waiting For Cotto To Become Great?

If you think about it, the main thing most detractors point out is that Floyd hasn't beaten any great fighters and if they were great then they weren't in their prime when he fought them. And if they were prime then they weren't much to begin with.....as in overrated.

So could it be, that he is giving Cotto more time to establish himself not just as a very good young fighter who deserves a shot BUT a great fighter.

Which brings me to a similar situaiton with Margarito. Face-to-face, Floyd told Margarito that the fight will even be bigger if they wait. What Floyd meant was, just keep piling up victories and I'll meet you down the line when you're considered something like a great. Margarito didn't do that and flopped, P. Wiliams didn't do that. Had Floyd beaten a guy like Margarito, it only would have satisfied people for the time being. Historically, it wouldn't have meant much and 30 years later, when looking at Floyd record, people wouldn't have pointed out his great victory against The Most Feared Fighter Margarito.

I think you know where I'm going with this

So it's all up to Miguel Cotto now, can he beat Gomez and go on to unify titles with the Margarito/Cintron winner...OR...will he be just another guy like so many others (who claimed they're being ducked) and flop just when he is about to reach greatness.

I don't think he is there yet and I think Floyd knows this too.

Notice how I didn't mention money as a driving factor......

Forget this "30 years later" stuff.

But the point of your post is fine. Hatton and Floyd milked it perfectly. When I started lurking these forums in '05, that's the fight that all the talk was about. It took about two and a half years. Expect the Cotto fight to be maybe late 2009

Geez, people really love to talk about this situation, when it's not too hard to figure out.

Floyd: would rather fight Oscar than Cotto because he can make more money there, it is probably an easier fight, and he's on better terms with GBP than Arum.

Cotto: his team has stated they prefer Oscar because of the payday and exposure. Arum is on better terms with GBP than Mayweather.

DLH and Schaefer: "If negotiations with Mayweather fall thru, we will fight Cotto".

Instead of looking at it logically, people want to place blame and make excuses and whatnot.

          "Mayweather is scared"
          "Cotto is not worthy"

Boxing fans have for years had to wait for their matchups to take place, and sometimes it never does.

Hopefully it happens in early 2009.

If both guys are still undefeated and Mayweather is the biggest fight out there for Cotto, and vice versa, and HBO starts pushing for the bout, we'll probably get our wish.

Early 09 folks, maybe even the middle of 09 but the bout WILL happen. The wait will just make it muh bigger. Floyd was already asked about Cotto and he said "I would like to see him keep winning and keep his FANBASE GROWING" The fight will be bigger than big when the time comes, patience is a virtue.

If Floyd is waiting for Cotto to become a "bigger name" then why dont he just come out and say so? He had no problem saying it about Margarito, when THAT fight was being highly talked about. Problem with Floydboyz is, they always seem to know what Floyd thinking, and what his intentions are.

Exactly and look how people are already looking forward to a new opponent for Floyd, named Cotto. The Hatton victory on a "Presidential Popularity Poll" level didn't mean much to Floyd but historically/legacy, it will be one of the main victories on his resume. At this stage, what Floyd wants is, to not clean out the welterweight divison full of good BUT NOT GREAT fighters like Roy did at light-heavy BUT for these guys to fight each other with at least one of them becoming great. Did SRL clean out the 160lb division? No he just defeated one of the greatest fighers of that division in Hagler. Cotto could be that guy if he gets a few more noteworthy victories. And Floyd would jump in a second to beat a fellow great figher to enhance his legacy.
