As usual, the UFC had a chaotic crowd for their UFC 65 pay-per-view event from the Arco Arena in Sacramento.

In the main event, the unforeseen took place as Georges St. Pierre demolished Matt Hughes to win the UFC welterweight title by knockout in the second round.

After a first round that saw Pierre batter Hughes with punches, knocking him down at the end of the first and nearly taking him out, he continued the assault in the second as numerous punches and a high kick sent him down once again as the ref saved him while Pierre jumped in for the kill with punches.

UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia retained his title by unanimous decision over Jeff Monson. The scores were 50-45, 49-46 and 49-46, all for for Sylvia.

A pro-Monson crowd was unable to lift their man towards a win. In a bout lacking the fireworks of the main event, Sylvia dished out some damage, but appeared to be sluggish at times, with neither man pushing the envelope during numerous spots in the fight. The rounds were close, but Monson was bleeding, his face was swelling and he looked to be battered fighter by the final round.

Alessio Sakara stopped Drew McFedries in a first round war.

Brandon Vera knocked out Frank Mir in the first round.

Jake O'Brien beat Josh Shockman by unanimous decision, scores were 30-27 across the boards.

Joe Stevenson tapped out Dokonjonosuke Mishima with a guillotine on the third try in round one.

Nick Diaz stopped Gleison Tibau in the second round after a barrage of unanswered punches on the ground.

James Irvin stopped Hector Ramirez in the second round.

Antoni Hardonk stopped Sherman Pendergarst in the first round.
