Edwin Valero (27-0, 27KOs) knows he has a problem and he's asked for help. As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, Valero's wife, Jennifer Carolina, has refused to file assault charges against the fighter. She told authorities her injuries were caused by an accidental fall down a flight of steps. Valero was taken into custody last Thursday after his wife arrived with a variety of injuries to the University Hospital of Los Andes in Mérida, Venezuela.

Per the medical reports, Valero's wife was listed as having multiple bruises, scratches and collapsed lung from a blow to the ribs. Valero arrived to the hospital in a very hostile manner and was taken into custody by the CICPC (The Body of Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations).

Because Valero's wife refused to press charges, the fighter was set for release. When he appeared for a hearing before a local judge, Valero voluntarily confessed that he has a dependency to alcohol and asked for professional help. He was transported to a psychiatric center in San Juan de Dios for a period of thirty days to six months to receive proper treatment. Because there have been anonymous threats in his direction, Valero was transported to the facility wearing a helmet and a bulletproof vest.
