It looks like the highly anticipated clash between unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs) and Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 32KOs) will not take place in 2016.

K2 Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions had been discussing this fight since early May and had more talks on Monday where a decision was made to hold of on making that bout  until next year.

Tom Loeffler, the managing director of K2 Promotions said to BoxingScene.com on Wednesday - "We've always had a good relationship with Golden Boy, we did a great promotion with the (David) Lemieux fight. The pressure was on as far as Gennady wanting to have the WBC title. 'Canelo' vacated the title so it takes the pressure off of there and so what Eric (Gomez, Sr. V.P. of Golden Boy) discussed, it looks like we're going to build towards that fight for next year, 2017."

"Its realistically the biggest fight in boxing, so realistically it's short notice to do it this year in September. So I think we would prefer it for next year."

You can hear the howling from the masses who were put through the never-ending process that involved Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao that took over five years to consummate that match-up.

But Loeffler points out - "I think in this particular situation with Mayweather-Pacquiao it seemed like every time they tried to negotiate it, there was a new issue that came up. In this situation both guys want the fight, I think the promoters - we've proven we can work together and have a successful promotion together. There's no issues with VADA drug testing, there's no issues as far as TV networks, sponsors, everything is pretty much there. It's just a matter of building it at the right time."
