VILORIA TITLE DEFENSE ON AUGUST 22 IN CEBU/Ronnie Nathanielsz

Newly crowned IBF light flyweight champion Brian Viloria’s first title defense is scheduled to be held at the plush Waterfront Hotel grand ballroom in Cebu City on August 22.

However, Solar Sports CEO Peter Chanliong said that should promoter Bob Arum be able to work out a rematch between Rodel Mayol(25-3-1, 19 KO’s) and Puerto Rico’s undefeated WBO light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon ( 32-0-1, 6 KO’s) on the same card, then Solar would stage the championship double header at the Araneta Coliseum, recognized as the “Mecca” of Philippine sports and entertainment.

Arum told BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports  he would insist that the undefeated Calderon who salvaged a sixth round technical draw against Mayol on the Miguel Cotto-Joshua Clottey undercard last Sunday, Manila Time, give the Filipino a rematch.

Arum said Monday from Las Vegas that “if Calderon’s cut heals I would try to put Mayol on the card” in the Philippines on August 22."

Mayol claimed he was effectively robbed of a world title on his third attempt claiming Calderon won only two of the six rounds- the first and the fourth – and he was shocked by the decision.

Tony Paolillo scored the fight 58-56 in favor of Calderon while in a four-point swing in what ended as a six round bout, respected boxing judge Tom Schreck had Mayol winning 58-56. The third judge, Steve Weisfeld scored it even at 57-57.

Mayol was clearly upset. “I’m very disappointed. I thought I won the fight and as soon as his cut heals I hope they let me fight him again” said Mayol who twice before lost to Japan-based Thai Eagle Kyowa in a WBC title fight and was knocked out in the 8th round by IBF champion Ulises Solis in a fight where Mayol had Solis on the verge of a knockout but got careless and was in turn knocked out in a fight card in Rosemont, Illinois.

Chanliong said he hadn’t heard of Arum’s plan but would call him on Monday in Las Vegas to check.

Arum also disclosed that IBF flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire would fight on August 15 at the new arena at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas . However, Arum said he had “no idea who Donaire is fighting since I was busy with the card in New York but I’m sure my people have made some arrangements and I’ll check in with my people.”

He said WBO No.1 ranked Bernabe Concepcion (28-1-1, 16 KO’s) would fight for the WBO featherweight title against champion Steven Luevano (36-1, 15 KO’s) on the same Las Vegas card. The fight was previously postponed after Luevano suffered a back injury in training.
