Jose 'Chon' Zepeda, the sensation of the moment, revealed that if he's not given the opportunity to fight for the junior welterweight championship in the near future, he would love to face the winner of the long-awaited lightweight battle between Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez, which takes place this coming Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Last week, Zepeda knocked out former world champion Ivan Baranchyk in five rounds in an absolute war that saw eight knockdowns.
Zepeda would like to go for a junior welterweight title, but the champions, Josh Taylor and Jose Ramirez, are going to face each other in 2021.
If he's unable to get a crack at a championship at 140, he would entertain the idea of dropping down to face the Lomachenko-Lopez winner. Lomachenko and Lopez will collide for the WBC Franchise, WBO, IBF, WBA titles.
“Yes, I have looked at all the options and as a boxer, from the first moment you enter this, you have the the dream of being a world champion, that is what I want more than anything at this moment. Actually, I don't like to mention names, rather I would like to say that I am for any world champion," expressed Zepeda (33-2, 26 KOs) to ESPN Deportes.
“There are four organizations at 140 (pounds), and if we don't have a chance to go fast for any of those titles, we've thought about 135 (pounds). It's not easy, but with a good diet and good care, I think five pounds has a lot to do with it, I'm bigger at 135 pounds. I would love to go against the winner of Lomachenko-Lopez, it would be a very good fight. I already showed that I can box and that I also can take a shot and punch."
"I definitely think this is the best moment of my career, but I have had very bad spells. My career was going up, misfortunes happened that brought me down, the shoulder injury with (Terry) Flanagan, I wanted to return quickly and a head butt came (that created an injury). I had such a bad streak that I was about to retire. But thanks to the team, my family, especially my brother (René), he always believed and thanks to that I did not retire."
