Yuriorkis Gamboa: record, next fight and profile →
All indications point to WBA interm-lightweight champin Richard Abril getting the nod to face former lightweight champion Brandon Rios on April 14th. Featherweight king Yuriorkis Gamboa was scheduled to make the jump up to the lightweight division to face Rios but had a change of heart and decided to walk away from the fight.
When I last spoke with former lightweight champion Brandon Rios, he was a little irritable, as he was still coping with the reality that his scheduled April 14th opponent, Yuriorkis Gamboa, had failed to show up at two scheduled press stops in Los Angeles and Miami to promote their potential fight.

Highly regarded boxing trainer Robert Garcia always has his suitcase packed. Finding time to unpack, well that’s a different story. Here's Garcia's air itinerary this week, Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Puerto Rico and back to LA.

Todd duBoef, President of Top Rank, spoke with BoxingScene.com about the escalating situation with former featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa. On February 16th, duBoef and Gamboa reached an agreement on the terms for an HBO televised fight on April 14th with Brandon Rios, at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. DuBoef has a paper trail to document Gamboa's satisfaction with the terms, and his willingness to face Rios. Top Rank scheduled a media tour to promote the fight. To their surprise, Gamboa no-showed the entire media tour - including a Monday stop in Gamboa's hometown of Miami, Florida.
Brandon Rios has been on a bit of a rollercoaster ride the past few days. On Monday, the former lightweight champion made the trek from his bases in Oxnard, California to Miami, Florida to attend a press conference to officially announce his April 14th bout with Cuban stylist Yuriorkis Gamboa. The only problem was that Gamboa, who had requested the presser be held in Miami, was nowhere to be found, as was the exact case for today’s follow-up presser in Los Angeles.
