LAS VEGAS – A second knockout loss to Deontay Wilder won’t prevent Luis Ortiz from continuing his boxing career. The 40-year-old Ortiz is very disappointed that a slight tactical mistake resulted in Wilder knocking him out in the seventh round of their rematch Saturday night at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Ortiz was up on all three scorecards, however, and remains confident that he is capable of defeating any other heavyweight in the sport.
LAS VEGAS – If Kenny Bayless were the referee for his draw with Tyson Fury, not Jack Reiss, Deontay Wilder feels there’d be no need for their upcoming rematch. The WBC heavyweight champion implied during a post-fight press conference Saturday night that Bayless would’ve waved an end to his fight against Fury once Fury went down hard during the 12th round last December 1 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Reiss was widely applauded for affording Fury a chance to get up from Wilder’s vicious right-left combination because Fury somehow reached his feet and came back to land hard shots on Wilder before the final bell sounded
LAS VEGAS – Luis Ortiz thinks Tyson Fury will suffer the same fate as him in Fury’s upcoming rematch against Deontay Wilder. The dangerous Cuban contender suspects Wilder won’t respect Fury when they fight again, presumably because Fury doesn’t punch as hard as Ortiz hits. That’ll likely lead, according to Ortiz, to Wilder finishing the job this time against the lineal heavyweight champion.
LAS VEGAS – Deontay Wilder undoubtedly has established himself as one of the hardest-hitting knockout artists in boxing history. After watching Wilder knock out Luis Ortiz with one punch in the seventh round Saturday night, Ben Davison believes Wilder is the biggest puncher that has ever boxed. Tyson Fury’s trainer told a group of reporters following Wilder’s win at MGM Grand Garden Arena that Wilder doesn’t have an equal in terms of raw power.
As far as power goes, it’s undeniable at this point. Deontay Wilder is part of their fraternity when it comes to hitting the showers early. In his last four fights, it would be hard to fill up one hand with the number of rounds Wilder has won where he didn’t score a knockdown or knockout. He has scored the former in all but two fights in his career. A pair of knockdowns saved him, on the official scorecards, from his first loss last year against Tyson Fury.
By Tris Dixon - WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder knew when it landed. He gestured to the crowd, said something to ringsiders and walked off. That huge right hand had just connected on the head of Luis Ortiz and the 40-year-old Cuban had fallen and couldn’t get up. Wilder knew. It was his 41st knockout in 42 wins so he’d had plenty of practice...
