NEW YORK – Deontay Wilder is plenty confident he’ll knock out Luis Ortiz again. The WBC heavyweight champion realizes, though, that this is far from the easiest path toward another rematch with Tyson Fury. Ortiz is 40 – older, according to some skeptics – but the powerful southpaw still has lost only to Wilder.
WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder will be looking to do some damage when he steps in the ring for a rematch with Luis Ortiz in the fall, and then intends to create more drama when he faces Tyson Fury in the first half of 2020. Back in 2018, Wilder stopped Ortiz in the tenth round of a cracker in New York City, and then closed out the year with a controversial twelve round split draw over Fury in Los Angeles.
Nearly two months after racing to social media to share with his fans the major developments in his career, Deontay Wilder’s big reveal of not one but two allegedly secured rematches still remain fluid. Plans for the unbeaten heavyweight titlist to make his 10th defense in a rematch with top-rated contender Luis Ortiz have now shifted towards a working date of November 9, BoxingScene.com has learned.
Eddie Hearn, promoter for heavyweights Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte, does not expect WBC world champion Deontay Wilder to move forward with a planned rematch with Luis Ortiz. A few weeks ago, Wilder announced that a deal was reached to face Ortiz in a rematch on a date in September.
LAS VEGAS – Tyson Fury isn’t worried that Luis Ortiz will ruin his rematch with Deontay Wilder. The undefeated Fury figures Wilder will knock out Ortiz faster in their second fight than he did when they fought 15 months ago. Wilder survived serious trouble late in the seventh round of their March 2018 bout at Barclays Center to drop Ortiz twice in the 10th round and knocked him out.
One day after cautioning his upcoming opponent to not plan too far ahead, Luis Ortiz has decided to double down on that promise in light of recent events. The heavyweight division—and the boxing world—was thrown for a loop following Andy Ruiz’s stunning 7th round knockout upset of previously unbeaten Anthony Joshua to collect three major titles Saturday evening at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden.
NEW YORK – Luis Ortiz hopes Anthony Joshua hasn’t allowed Andy Ruiz Jr.’s flabby body to create a false sense of security. Ortiz is impressed with Ruiz’s boxing ability, enough to predict Ruiz will be plenty competitive Saturday night in their 12-round heavyweight title fight at Madison Square Garden. Ruiz, of course, became the beneficiary of Ortiz turning down promoter Eddie Hearn’s $7 million offer to replace Jarrell Miller as Joshua’s opponent once Miller failed three performance-enhancing drug tests.
Luis Ortiz couldn’t have been more thrilled when he received word of plans being finalized for his rematch with Deontay Wilder. The Cuban southpaw couldn’t have been more annoyed, though, when he saw the unbeaten titlist was already making plans beyond their upcoming sequel.
The message has now become clear regarding Deontay Wilder’s future—no new business until he settles up old matters. Mere days after revealing plans for a fall rematch with Luis Ortiz, the reigning unbeaten heavyweight titlist now claims plans are in place afterward to run it back with Tyson Fury.
WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is very eager to do a lot of damage when he steps in the ring with Luis Ortiz for a second time. On Tuesday, Wilder announced that a deal was reached to face Ortiz in a rematch. The fight is being targeted for a date in September.
