As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman officially opened up the period of free negotiations between the camps of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin.
The WBC had ordered the two boxers to face each other earlier this year. They were each allowed an interim fight. Last month Golovkin easily knocked out Dominic Wade in two rounds. And last Saturday night, Canelo knocked out Amir Khan in six rounds.
The fight between the two stars is being targeted for the fall of this year.
Sulaiman warns that a purse bid is firm for the date of May 24 - unless the two sides request more time to build the fight.
The WBC says their role in the negotiations is now done, for now. They have set the wheels in motion and now it's up to the parties involved to reach an agreement for the contest that everyone wants to see.
"If they do not reach an agreement, there will be a purse bid on May 24 in Mexico City," Sulaiman said. "Everything is now in the hands of the promoters and the boxers, the world awaits the fight. "
"If they reach an agreement for another interim-fight, then we will allow it. If they agree to make a business strategy that generates bigger business and bigger expectations for them and also for the benefit of sport."
"I think the fight is coming at a good time. The boxing world wants to see this fight. Some fights take time to make. It happened with 'Macho' Camacho and Julio Cesar Chavez, which took six years, Mayweather and Pacquiao it took five."
