World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman was ringside last Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, and watched Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez stop Billy Joe Saunders in eight rounds to unify the WBC, WBA, WBO super middleweight titles.

Over 73,000 fans witnessed Canelo land an uppercut to fracture the orbital bone of Saunders' right eye in the eight - which led to a stoppage before the start of the ninth.

Canelo is now one fight away from unifying the entire division - with IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant as the obvious target for Mexican Independence Day weekend in September.

Sulaiman was blown away by Canelo's performance and regards him as the best fighter in the world, pound-for-pound.

"This past Saturday May 8 will be remembered as the first ever major event which brought the 73,126 fans in the stadium and millions watching on DAZN and television around the world to celebrate life through boxing and a night which will forever remembered," Sulaiman said.

"The very loud crowd witnessed a superb demonstration of their hero, Saul Canelo Alvarez, who is without a doubt the best fighter in the world today, the pound-for-pound king.

"A unique, electrifying atmosphere, the traditional wave, created by fans; the spectacular entrance, with the act of the Pepe Aguilar and his daughter, and the explosion of joy with the spectacular knockout, after an eighth round which resulted in a brutal demonstration of pure power and dominance and BJ Saunders must be praised for his bravery as stood there trying to win the fight with courage. Canelo crushed his English opponent and is one step away from achieving his goal of unifying the super middleweight division titles."
