Victor Ortiz: record, next fight and profile →

Former champion Amir Khan didn’t expect to go into Washington, D.C. and lose his WBA and IBF titles last night to hometown favorite Lamont Peterson but that’s exactly what happened.

BoxingScene.com recently caught up with former unified junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander "The Great". Alexander makes his ring return in February when he faces Argentinean slugger Marcos Maidana.

While the subject of random drug testing remains on the table, all parties involved are moving forward with plans for Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto to meet again on February 12 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Victor Ortiz handed Andre Berto his first pro defeat earlier this year in a fight that many experts called a 'Fight of the Year' candidate. Both fighters hit the deck in a very exciting bout that took place in Connecticut and was televised by HBO.

On Tuesday night I spoke with trainer Tony Morgan, known best for his work with former champion Andre Berto. I was curious as to Morgan’s take on the recent news surrounding a possible rematch between Berto and Victor Ortiz, and whether random drug testing would play a role in the fight.

A bombshell was dropped on the boxing industry last Thursday, when it was reported that Showtime secured the rights to the welterweight rematch between Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto.

There was a sense of jubilation on Tuesday when it was revealed that the New York State Athletic Commission had approved the license of former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito, paving the way for his December 3rd rematch with Miguel Cotto to land inside of Madison Square Garden. Margarito had suffered a broken orbital bone in his face and developed a cataract in his right eye in a brutal points loss to Manny Pacquiao last year, leaving the commission with some hesitation towards approving him.

There were several vested observers during Saturday night’s third match between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez and it goes without saying that Tony Morgan, trainer to former two-time welterweight champion Andre Berto, was just as curious as anyone.

If the rumors were true, then Andre Berto would’ve clutched onto his alphabet welterweight title, settling for a badly faded name opponent for his next title defense while watching the parade go by.

Former welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-3, 22KOs) is sitting back and waiting for his manager, Rolando Arellano, to confirm a finalized deal for a rematch with Andre Berto (28-1, 22KOs), which may take place on January 28th on HBO.
