One of boxing’s most electrifying, young knockout artists is set to return to the ring March 19. BoxingScene.com has confirmed that unbeaten welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. will meet Michael McKinson in a main event that night. The venue hasn’t been determined for the 12-round bout in which Ortiz (18-0, 18 KOs), of Grand Prairie, Texas, will square off against McKinson (21-0, 2 KOs), of Portsmouth, England.

Vergil Ortiz has a fight date and the chance to enter a final title elimination bout. They just won’t occur on the same night. The unbeaten welterweight contender from Grand Prairie, Texas is being groomed for an active 2022 campaign, as he is set to return January 22. The fight date was confirmed by Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions and Ortiz’s promoter who was forced to reveal the news during the mandatory challenger portion of the 59th annual WBC Convention on Tuesday.

Unbeaten welterweight puncher Vergil Ortiz is hoping to secure a world title shot in 2022. Ortiz (18-0, 18 KOs) has several paths to explore - with being the number one ranked fighter under the WBC and WBO, and ranked at number two under the WBA.

The next step in the career of Vergil Ortiz Jr. will come without head trainer Robert Garcia Sr. A three-plus year relationship between the unbeaten welterweight contender and the veteran cornerman has come to an end, both parties confirmed Friday. News of the split was first reported during an ESPN+ boxing telecast live from Las Vegas, though with both sides feeling the need to clear the air after a subsequent claim regarding Ortiz’s future.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. has become familiar with the recurring theme following each win these days. The unbeaten welterweight contender from Grand Prairie, Texas rose to the occasion over the weekend, scoring five knockdowns en route to an eighth-round knockout of Lithuania’s Egidijus Kavaliauskas (22-2-1, 18KOs) this past Saturday at Ford Center at The Star in nearby Frisco. Ortiz accepted the fight while awaiting a bigger opportunity in the lucrative 147-pound division, namely a crack at reigning WBO titlist Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford (37-0, 28KOs).

Vergil Ortiz Jr. (18-0, 18 KOs) retains his WBO International Welterweight Title and gets closer to a world title shot after his knock out defeat of the Lithuanian Egidijus “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas (22-2-1, 18 KOs).
