Vasquez Defeats Felix: Valdez, Gvozdyk, Falcao Win

By Rick Reeno

MGM Grand, Las Vegas - In a bout for the WBA interim-super featherweight title, Bryan Vasquez (34-1, 17KOs) outboxed and outslugged previously undefeated Jose Felix Jr. (26-1-1, 21KOs) to retain the title with a dominating twelve round unanimous decision. Felix lost a point in the ninth round for a low blow. The scores were 117-110 (correct), and two head shaking scores of 114-113 - meaning the fight would have been a draw if not for the point deduction. Most press media at ringside had Vasquez winning pretty wide.

Olympian Oleksandr Gvozdyk (1-0, 1KO), trained by Robert Garcia, made his pro debut with a vicious first round knockout of Mike Montoya (4-3-1, 2KOs) in a light heavyweight contest. A huge right hand put Montoya down and out.

Hot prospect super featherweight prospect Oscar Valdez (10-0, 9KOs) knocked out Adrian Perez (10-5-1, 1KO) in the fourth round with a hard hook to body.

Middleweight prospect Esquiva Falcao (3-0, 2KOs), an Olympic silver medal winner in 2012, had to settle for a distance win against a durable Publio Pena (2-2, 1KO). The scores were 60-54, 60-54, 60-53.

In a bout for the WBC Continental Americas light heavyweight title, Sean Monaghan (21-0, 14KOs) broke down Joe McCreedy (15-7-2, 6KOs), who had "Irish" Micky Ward working his corner, for a fifth round TKO win. McCreedy went down to his knees in the third after taking some very hard shots to the body. During the fifth, two knockdowns from body punishment sealed the deal.

Jose Felix hopefully you'll grow up after this experience, your camp complained about Vasquez before the fight yet you were a dirty, undeciplined fighter. That knee to the groin should have been an automatic DQ good riddance
