Vanes "The Nightmare" Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs) is hoping to put on a show when he takes a big risk on Cinco De Mayo weekend.
On May 5th, in an HBO televised main event, the Armenian fighter will challenge WBC, IBF, IBO, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs).
There will be a sizable pack of fans for both boxers at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Vanes replaces Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who was suspended for six months after testing positive for clenbuterol.
The odds are stacked against Vanes.
He's coming off a two year layoff, with his last contest coming in May 2016 when he lost a twelve round decision to Erislandy Lara. He's moving up in weight, and he's taking that fight on late notice.
But he claims that a Mexican style war will take place in the ring that night.
"I am excited to show everyone how good I can be. I feel so fresh and strong. Fans and Gennady will be amazed . We may not be Mexican but I guarantee you it's going to feel like two Mexicans are going to war on Cinco De Mayo," Vanes said.
Vanes revealed that he accepted the fight with no questions asked.
"When I got the call from Don King, I was laying in bed with the kids. 'Hey, man, there's this guy they call Triple G or something like that, you want to fight?" I said, 'Of course.' That's how I found out I got the fight," Vanes said.
