Tureano Johnson: record, next fight and profile →
Having not fought since October 2015 due to injury, Tureano Johnson (19-1, 13 KOs) is understandably chomping at the bit to get back in the ring this Saturday in Indio, California. Mexico’s Antonio Gutiérrez (21-2-1, 9 KOs) will likely provide a stiff test for the returning middleweight who defeated Eamonn O’Kane last time out via unanimous decision.
Middleweight contender Tureano Johnson will face Antonio Gutierrez of Mexico on Saturday night, Golden Boy Promotions announced Monday afternoon. The 10 round bout will take place at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. Also taking place on the Golden Boy Promotions card will be a 10 round welterweight bout between former WBO welterweight titleholder Sadam Ali and Jorge Silva.
After defeating Eamonn O'Kane on October 17th 2015 on the Gennady Golovkin-David Lemieux pay-per-view undercard at the Madison Square Garden in New York, Tureano Johnson (19-1, 13KOs) looked to be in prime position to face 'GGG' in 2016 as he was the IBF's top ranked challenger.
With WBO middleweight titlist Billy Joe Saunders bypassing an opportunity to unify his belt with WBA/IBO/IBF champ Gennady Golovkin, it seemed only logical that Tureano Johnson - the IBF's mandatory challenger - would be next in line to face Golovkin, who is scheduled to fight again on April 23rd on HBO.
WBA/IBF/IBO/WBC interim champion Gennady Golovkin is scheduled to return to the ring on April 23rd. Venues in New York, Los Angeles and Texas are interested in hosting the fight.
If Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs), who holds the IBF middleweight title, is unable to consummate a deal with WBO belt-holder Billy Joe Saunders, the IBF is prepared to call on him to fulfill his mandatory obligation versus Tureano Johnson (19-1, 13KOs) as soon as possible.
Middleweight: Jermain Taylor exits for inactivity and let’s hope, given his erratic behavior in the last year, no one who cares about him lets him take any further head trauma. Daniel Jacobs moves past a defeated David Lemieux who will try to rebuild after running into the GGG juggernaut. Golovkin’s looming IBF mandatory, Tureano Johnson, cracks the top ten for the first time.
NEW YORK – Tureano Johnson wasn’t among the middleweights Gennady Golovkin mentioned in the aftermath of his impressive victory over David Lemieux at Madison Square Garden. If the Kazakh knockout artist can’t land the winner between Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs), the high-profile fight he wants for obvious reasons, there are two other middleweight matches Golovkin and his handlers mentioned him possibly pursuing.
Abel Sanchez, the trainer for WBO/IBF/WBA middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs), is hoping to have his fighter back in action as early as February. Golovkin was in the ring this past Saturday night, when he stopped David Lemieux in eight rounds to unify the three middleweight belts at New York's Madison Square Garden. Promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions is looking to have his boxer as busy as possible in 2016. Golovkin has been averaging three to four fights per year since his HBO debut.
NEW YORK, NY - In the highly anticipated main event on Saturday night, WBA/IBO and WBC "Interim" World Champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) added the IBF Middleweight Title to his collection with an exhilarating performance against former IBF Middleweight World Champion, David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs), culminating in an eighth round technical knockout victory on Saturday, October 17, at Madison Square Garden with a sold out crowed of 20, 548 fight fans.
