Tramaine Williams: record, next fight and profile →
By Keith Idec - Angelo Leo could’ve complained. This was, after all, no simple switch of opponents. Leo went from facing right-handed Stephen Fulton to slick southpaw Tramaine Williams on just three days’ notice once Fulton tested positive Wednesday for COVID-19. The unbeaten junior featherweight contender instead downplayed a challenge Williams won’t...
Al Haymon, promoter Tom Brown and Showtime’s Stephen Espinoza prepared as best they could for exactly what happened Wednesday. They developed a comprehensive, costly contingency plan to keep their televised bouts intact in the event boxers scheduled to participate tested positive for COVID-19. Observing seven of the last 10 main events ESPN and Top Rank produced in June and July get altered, postponed or canceled altogether reinforced the importance of being able to make such adjustments at the 11th hour.
Stephen Fulton probably won’t have to wait too much longer to fight for the WBO junior featherweight title. BoxingScene.com has learned that Fulton’s handlers have petitioned the WBO for Fulton to fight the Angelo Leo-Tramaine Williams winner next for the WBO’s 122-pound crown. Pending the WBO’s approval, Fulton would have to fight the Leo-Williams winner within 180 days of their fight Saturday night.
Stephen Fulton was the only one of the six fighters scheduled to fight on Showtime’s three-bout broadcast Saturday night that didn’t participate in a virtual press conference Wednesday. He won’t fight Saturday night, either. BoxingScene.com has confirmed that Philadelphia’s Fulton and two members of his team tested positive for COVID-19. Fulton (18-0, 8 KOs) therefore has been removed from Showtime’s main event – a 12-round, 122-pound fight against Albuquerque’s Angelo Leo (19-0, 9 KOs) for the vacant WBO junior featherweight title at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut
There was a brief point in the early stages of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic where Ra’eese Aleem wondered if he would have to start all over whenever action resumed. Even in a healthy market, the unbeaten junior featherweight still had to go the extra mile in order to command attention. As the spring schedule was decimated and threatening to creep into the summer, the realization came that he had to be willing to make a statement in order to push his way higher on the priority list.
Tramaine Williams obviously would prefer it if fans could attend perhaps the biggest fight of his career Saturday night. The skillful junior featherweight is from New Haven, Connecticut, about a 45-minute drive from where he’ll encounter another unbeaten boxer, Ra'eese Aleem, in a 10-round, 122-pound bout. Fans aren’t allowed to attend the Williams-Aleem match at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, due to COVID-19 restrictions.
A triumphant return to the ring is in store for Showtime Championship Boxing. For the first time in nearly five months, the American cable outlet will present live boxing action beginning with a tripleheader airing live August 1 from a crowdless Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. As previously reported by BoxingScene.com, unbeaten junior featherweights Stephen Fulton and Angelo Leo will collide for the vacant WBO title in the evening’s headliner.
