In June 2019, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Katie Taylor won a close twelve round decision over Delfine Persoon to unify the entire lightweight division. There were many who felt the outcome was controversial and Persoon had done more than enough to walk away with the titles.
Katie Taylor considers her rematch with Delfine Persoon the best alternative to testing herself against Amanda Serrano on August 22. The Taylor-Persoon rematch, which was officially announced by Matchroom Boxing on Thursday, was put together relatively quickly once it became clear that Serrano would not agree to fight Taylor next month in England. Taylor’s unconvincing victory over Persoon in their first fight 13 months ago gives her plenty of motivation now that the Serrano showdown has fallen apart.
Katie Taylor finally has an opponent secured for her next title defense—and one where she can settle up on unfinished business. The unbeaten lineal lightweight champion from Bray, Ireland has agreed to terms for a long-awaited rematch with Belgium’s Delfine Persoon (44-2, 18KOs). The two will collide on August 22, with the bout to take place on the property of Matchroom Boxing headquarters in Brentwood, Essex, England.
