Sullivan Barrera: record, next fight and profile →
Mandalay Bay, LAS VEGAS, NV - Sullivan Barrera (21-1) has bounced back nicely from his March, 2016 unanimous decision loss to Andre Ward. Since that setback, Barrera has gone 4-0- with two knockouts and will likely face WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol or WBO champion Sergey Kovalev in his next fight.
The World Boxing Association (WBA) Championships Committee notified Cuban boxer Sullivan Barrera (21-1, 14KO) that he is the mandatory opponent to fight for the Light Heavyweight Championship, currently held by Russian Dmitry Bivol (12-0, 10KO).
Light heavyweight Dmitry Bivol (13-0, 11 KOs) is undeniably one of Russia’s top new stars. The Russian is coming off a major knockout win over Australian Trent Broadhurst, which has officially confirmed his claim of the WBA light heavyweight champion. Vsenabox conducted an interview with Vadim Kornilov, who is Bivol’s manager, about his fighter's immediate and more distant plans, as well as about the current state of the division, partially dominated by the Russian boxers.
Sergey Kovalev’s return from his second defeat to Andre Ward was a success in and out of the ring. According to ratings released Wednesday by Nielsen Media Research, a peak audience of 900,000 viewers tuned in to HBO to watch Kovalev knock out Vyacheslav Shabranskyy in the second round Saturday night in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. An average audience of 869,000 saw Kovalev-Shabranskyy, which didn’t have much time to build an audience because Kovalev demolished his overmatched opponent so quickly.
After disposing of Vyacheslav Shabranskyy in two rounds on Saturday night at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York, it looks like Sergey Kovalev will be making a relatively quick return in the spring. As BoxingScene.com reported earlier, Kovalev will be returning on March 3rd, also at the Theater in Madison Square Garden.

Light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera must know what he is doing, with regards to his pro career. And he keeps winning. Barrera turned down an opportunity to face Sergey Kovalev, reportedly because he was not offered proper compensation for future fights. These actions might put Barrera in the dog house with Main Events, the promotional company that has promoted him for several years. He does have HBO and a growing boxing fan-base in his corner.
The World Boxing Association light heavyweight world champion Dmitry Bivol of Russia says a mandatory fight with Sullivan Barrera of Cuba is an excellent opportunity to test his worth. On November 25 at the Theater in New York's Madison Square Garden, Barrera will face Dominican contender Felix Valera on the undercard of the light heavyweight world title clash between Russia's Sergey Kovalev and Ukrainian Vyacheslav Shabranskyy.
