Sullivan Barrera: record, next fight and profile →
Dmitry Bivol's next opponent Sullivan Barrera has only been beaten my one man, Andre Ward. Back in March 2016, respected Cuban Barrera dropped a unanimous decision in Ward's hometown of Oakland, and Bivol has paid close attention to that performance.
It was tough to tell who was having more fun: WBA Light Heavyweight World Champion Dmitry Bivol (12-0, 10 KOs), or the two dozen teens who met with him and watched him train at the Legendz Gym on Tuesday, February 20.

Dmitry Bivol initially considered Sullivan Barrera’s choice between opponents as a slight against him. When the unbeaten WBA light heavyweight champion first learned Barrera opted to fight him instead of Sergey Kovalev on March 3, Bivol believed Barrera determined he would be easier to beat than Kovalev. Now that Kyrgyzstan’s Bivol has heard Barrera’s explanation from the challenger himself, the defending champion has a better understanding of Barrera’s decision.
Top light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera is working hard in the second half of his training camp for his March 3rd HBO televised clash against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. The 35-year-old former Cuban amateur standout has been on quite a run. After losing a unanimous decision to the now retired former pound-for-pound king Andre Ward, Barrera has put together a four fight win streak against the likes of Vyacheslav Shabranskyy, Paul "Pay Per View" Parker, Joe Smith Jr. and the hard hitting Felix Valera.
Dmitry Bivol was pleasantly surprised when he learned Sullivan Barrera chose to fight him March 3 in New York. Bivol believed Barrera would instead opt to challenge WBO light heavyweight champ Sergey Kovalev in the main event that night. Facing the better-known Kovalev would’ve earned Barrera more money, as well as the title shot the Cuban contender will get against Bivol (12-0, 10 KOs), the WBA champion.
Dmitry Bivol confirmed Friday in an interview with BoxingScene.com that he has enrolled in VADA’s testing program for his upcoming title fight against Sullivan Barrera. Bivol arrived in the Los Angeles area earlier this week from Russia to train for their March 3 bout in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The WBA light heavyweight champion has undergone commission testing for performance-enhancing drugs before and after previous bouts, but this will mark the first fight for which he’ll be tested by the Las Vegas-based Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.
Light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (21-1, 14 KO) and his team have brought in former world champion Chris Algieri to use as a nutritionist to further prepare for the upcoming showdown with WBA world champion Dmitry Bivol on March 3rd at the The Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Sergey Kovalev respects Sullivan Barrera’s unconventional decision to fight Dmitry Bivol instead of facing him March 3 in New York. Barrera, the mandatory challenger for Bivol’s WBA light heavyweight title, chose to battle Bivol in the opener of HBO’s doubleheader that night from The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The Cuban contender could’ve challenged Kovalev for the WBO championship in the main event for more money than he’ll make for boxing Bivol, but declined.
Light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera has come out firing after reading a recent article on BoxingScene.com. Promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events had discussed how WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev was disappointed because Barrera was his preferred opponent for March 3 in The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.
