Light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera has recovered from a minor injury and he is now back in the gym.
A cut over one eye deprived him of fighting on August 18 against Sean Monaghan, as the main event bout of a card being staged Golden Boy Promotions and Main Events on Facebook Watch, but the Cuban hopes to return to the ring sometime in October.
"Well, he started in the gym two weeks ago, we are already increasing the training and if God wants we are already planning something with the promoter to return sometime in October. He was doing sparring for August 18 fight against Monaghan and a headbutt hurt his right eyebrow. A pity because it was a tremendous opportunity for Sullivan against an opponent that would have been convenient for him to measure where he was and how he was going to return, but God willing he will return in October. I trust him a lot," Barrera's manager, Luis Molina, said to George Ebro.
For years, Barrera had hoped to fight stablemate Sergey Kovalev
Earlier this month, Kovalev lost his WBO light heavyweight title when he was knocked out in seven rounds by Eleider Alvarez.
There is a rematch clause, with the second fight to take place in the coming months.
"Since we signed to join Main Events that was the dream: to face Kovalev. I do not think he's finished. We will see how he is doing in the rematch against Alvarez," Molina said.
"For me it was an overtraining or he ran out of gas. Maybe he did not train well, but I saw him winning the fight until the moment of the knockout. We all know that in boxing that a good shot can change everything.
"He's going to get the titles back. There are so many good fighters in the division. There are the Russians like Bivol and Beterbiev. There's the rematch with Alvarez, Sullivan is also out there."
