By Keith Idec - LAS VEGAS – Stephen Fulton finally unveiled the way to beat Brandon Figueroa on Saturday night. Fulton fended off the ferocious Figueroa and convinced two judges that he defeated Figueroa in their 12-round, 122-pound title unification fight at Park MGM’s Dolby Live. Figueroa forced Fulton to bang it out in a proverbial phone booth for 36 stressful minutes, but judges Tim Cheatham (116-112) and Dave Moretti (116-112) favored Fulton’s consistent counter shots on the inside over Figueroa’s persistent pressure and often effective aggression.

LAS VEGAS – Stephen Fulton wasn’t the least bit surprised Brandon Figueroa beat Luis Nery. The undefeated Fulton predicted Figueroa would win their 122-pound title fight six months ago. Fulton considered Nery a true bantamweight boxing out of his weight class, whereas Figueroa had height and strength advantages Nery wouldn’t be able to overcome.
LAS VEGAS – Brandon Figueroa embraces the description “pretty ugly” as a compliment. The undefeated Figueroa feeds off the fact that many of his opponents portray him as a pretty boy with a style entirely too ugly to beat them. Having opponents underestimate him has motivated the unbeaten WBC super bantamweight champion throughout his impressive run in the 122-pound division. The Weslaco, Texas, native has had one close call – a 12-round split draw with a wildly overweight Julio Ceja in November 2019 – but otherwise Figueroa has proven to be one of boxing’s best junior featherweights over the past few years.
LAS VEGAS – Stephen Fulton cannot envision Murodjon Akhmadaliev moving in a different direction if he is presented with an opportunity to fully unify boxing’s 122-pound championships at some point in the first half of 2022.
