Coming off the toughest win of his career, a grueling twelve round war with Mexico’s Carlos Cuadras, Roman Gonzalez could probably have tried to get away with an easy one. He opted not to go straight back to Cuadras but that didn’t add up to easy.
Nicaraguan hero and pound-for-pound star Roman Gonzalez is aiming to increase the profile of boxing’s lower weight classes after lifting World Titles in four divisions. This Saturday night the WBC Super-Flyweight king fights Wisaksil Wangek on the Gennady Golovkin v Daniel Jacobs undercard as chief support, defending his crown for the first time.
WBC champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (46-0, 38 KOs), Nicaragua, 114.6 pounds, vs. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (41-4-1, 38 KOs), Thailand, 114 pounds. Golovkin and Jacobs weighed in at almost exactly the same weight Friday morning inside The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Kazakhstan’s Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) officially weighed 159.6 pounds for their 12-round middleweight title fight at Madison Square Garden. Brooklyn’s Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) weighed 159.8 pounds.
NEW YORK – There figures to be much more weight separating Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs when they enter the ring Saturday night than there was Friday morning. Golovkin and Jacobs weighed in at almost exactly the same weight Friday morning inside The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Kazakhstan’s Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) officially weighed 159.6 pounds for their 12-round middleweight title fight. Brooklyn’s Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) weighed 159.8 pounds. Because their weigh-in was about four hours earlier than usual, at least 38 hours will pass between the time they weigh in and the opening bell for their HBO Pay-Per-View main event. Jacobs is expected to weigh at least five or six pounds more than Golovkin once their fight starts, but Abel Sanchez, Golovkin’s trainer, doesn’t think the earlier weigh-in will amount to more of an advantage for Jacobs than for Golovkin.
For the first time since his professional debut 12 years ago, undefeated Nicaraguan boxer Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez will enter the ring without the man who guided him to all his victories, trainers Arnulfo Obando. Obando, who died of a stroke last November in Managua, Nicaragua, led Chocolatito Gonzalez to four world titles in four different weight divisions.
New York - Carlos Cuadras (35-1-1, 27 KO’s) made a name for himself on HBO last year when he took the consensus number 1 pound for pound fighter in the world, Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez (45-0, 38 KO’s), to depths we have never seen before.
