Showtime's Charlo-Hogan Telecast Peaked At 275K Viewers

Fewer viewers watched Jermall Charlo’s stoppage of Dennis Hogan on Saturday night than tuned in for Charlo’s previous fight.

According to figures released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research, viewership for Showtime’s telecast peaked at 275,000 toward the end of a middleweight title clash Charlo won by seventh-round technical knockout at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. An average audience of 249,000 watched Charlo’s victory over Hogan.

Charlo drew a peak audience of 434,000 for his prior appearance, which Showtime aired June 29 from NRG Arena in Houston. The 30-year-old Charlo’s 12-round, unanimous-decision victory over Brandon Adams was watched that night by an average of 379,000 viewers.

Showtime’s viewership could’ve been impacted Saturday night because its tripleheader aired at the same time as college football’s Big Ten Championship game on FOX.

No. 1 Ohio State’s 34-21, comeback win against No. 8 Wisconsin was FOX’s highest-rated college football game this season. Nielsen’s numbers indicated an average of 13,550,000 viewers watched the Buckeyes come back from a 21-7 halftime deficit to remain unbeaten.

Houston’s Charlo also faced a huge underdog in a second straight fight, which could’ve curtailed interest in it. The 34-year-old Hogan hadn’t been beaten by knockout or technical knockout prior to Saturday night, but he moved up from 154 pounds to challenge Charlo for his WBC world middleweight title and had knocked out only 22 percent of his opponents prior to their fight.

Their mostly one-sided fight unfolded accordingly, as Charlo (30-0, 22 KOs) knocked down Ireland’s Hogan (28-3-1, 7 KOs) twice – once apiece in the fourth and seventh rounds. Hogan got up from the second knockdown, which was caused by a left hook just 14 seconds into the seventh round.

Referee Charlie Fitch still decided a fading Hogan shouldn’t continue. He waved an end to their scheduled 12-round, 160-pound championship match 28 seconds into the seventh round.

That’s what happens when the big names don’t want that Lions Only smoke!! GGG and Nelo won’t ever mention his name!! Not surprised that GGG is staying away from Charlo but I’m surprised Nelo hasn’t jumped in the Lions Den…

Been saying Espinoza needs to stop wasting CBS time and money on these types of fights. Or is it high time for him to leave this sport and pack up his bags?
