Promoter Ben Shalom of Boxxer still feels confident that a rematch will come off between middleweights Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr.

According to the Shalom, the second fight would land in late August or early September.

In January, Smith pulled off a stunning upset when he knocked out Eubank in four rounds.

In the aftermath, Eubank exercised an immediate rematch clause - with the second bout set down for July 1 at the AO Arena in Manchester.

The fight was postponed after Smith withdrew with injury.

Shalom is waiting to confirm if Smith will be physically ready to fight on the dates being targeted.

"It's a fight that was scheduled and has had to be rescheduled because of Liam Smith's injury," Shalom told Sky Sports News on Monday.

"It's frustrating for him as much as anyone, but we can't keep Chris Eubank Jr waiting forever. I did meet Kalle Sauerland (Eubank promoter) last week. We expect a date to be finalized at the end of August, early September."

Shalom is well aware that Eubank is being approached with a large offer to face Conor Benn in the month of September.

Eubank was scheduled to face Benn back in October of 2022, but the contest was called off when UK media revealed that Benn had tested positive for a banned substance. It was later disclosed that Benn had tested positive for the same banned substance in a separate test.

Benn, who is still being investigated by UKAD and the British Boxing Board of Control, believes the fight with Eubank is inching closer to becoming a reality.

Despite Benn's recent statements, Shalom believes the Smith-Eubank rematch will happen as planned.

"I know there's been reports of things going on in the boxing world that we're not a part of," Shalom added. "But our understanding, as of last week, is the rematch will happen and it has just been very, very frustrating for both fighters."

"I think myself and Kalle like a date at the end of August. We both like it. He's got to speak to Chris Eubank Jr, and obviously Liam Smith has done everything he can to make sure he's fit for that date.

"Hopefully we're able to announce next week, but as is the case in boxing, we'll see what happens - it's been frustrating for both guys because both guys want the fight. We hoped to be fit for July, then early August, now end of August, but from speaking to Liam and his team, we'll make sure that before the date is announced, he's absolutely 100 percent."
