Serrano Retains WBO Belt: Cotto Wins, Rivera Shocks Lopez

Aguas Buenas, PR- In an intense bell-to-bell battle held at the Coliseum Samuel 'Sammy' Rodríguez de Aguas Buenas, World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Cindy 'Checkmate' Serrano (26-5-3 , 10KO's), managed to win a unanimous decision victory over Mexican challenger Paola 'La Fiera' Torres (10-2-1, 3KO's), defending for the first time his crown.

Serrano, who used all of her boxing skills, had to deal with the aggressive push of Torres, who never stopped pressing.

"It was a strong fight, but I was able to make the adjustments to impose my boxing and win the fight," said Serrano, who climbed the ring in a commemorative outfit to Roberto Clemente. "I am happy with the work that was done, and now we will continue training to return to defend my crown once again in the near future, my greatest desire is to continue representing the WBO and my island, Puerto Rico."

The three cards of the judges were identical 97-93.

Meanwhile, Torres was frustrated by the decision, commenting that:

"I feel I did my job and dominated the champion," Torres said. "If you compare the faces of both, you'll notice who took the brunt of it. I feel that I won, that I belong to that group of champions, I'm sad because I could not take the title back to Mexico. I respect the determination. I hope to get myself another chance and be able to fight again for a world title very soon. "

Meanwhile, Abner 'Pin' Cotto (21-3, 9KO's), who had a last-gasp change in the co-feature, managed to score a first-round knockout win over Edwin López (28-9, 24KO's).

In one of the most exciting fights of the night, Christian Rivera (6-0, 5KO's) surprised many, by annihilating in two rounds the wide favorite, Angel 'Memito' Lopez (6-1, 6KO's).

The sensational welterweight John 'The Beast' Correa (2-0, 2KO's) destroyed Jose Leon (0-1) in the first round, giving him a fulminating knockout.

The 'Night of Champions DIRECTV' card was presented by Universal Promotions.

why Mexican fighters complaint when they clearly lose ? Barrera, Morales, Yazmin Rivas and now Torres.. lol
