NEW YORK – The press conference Wednesday was all about the Deontay Wilder-Luis Ortiz heavyweight title fight November 4 at Barclays Center. Sergey Lipinets’ name wasn’t mentioned, but BoxingScene.com has learned Lipinets will fight Japan’s Akihiro Kondo for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title that night as part of a “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader. The third fight Showtime is set to broadcast from Brooklyn will feature former WBA middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs), but Jacobs’ opponent hasn’t been solidified.
Now that the Deontay Wilder-Luis Ortiz heavyweight title fight is essentially a done deal, BoxingScene.com has learned Showtime is in the process of finalizing a tripleheader for November 4 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
According to Alex Vaysfeld, the manager of Sergey Lipinets (12-0, 10 KOs), they are targeting a date in November to fight Akihiro Kondo (29-6-1, 16 KOs) for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title. Last week, Terence Crawford vacated the IBF belt a day before a purse bid was scheduled to take place for a mandatory defense against Lipinets. After Crawford vacated, the IBF ordered two highest ranked contenders - Lipinets and Kondo - to fight for the vacant belt.
BoxingScene.com has been advised by the International Boxing Federation that top contenders Sergey Lipinets (12-0, 10 KO) and Akihiro Kondo (29-6-1, 16 KOs) were given until September 30th to reach an agreement for an ordered fight for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title. If no agreement is reached, the fight will head to a purse bid. Lipinets [ranked at 1] and Kondo [ranked at 3] have both advised the IBF, in writing, of their willingness to participate in the fight.
BoxingScene.com has been advised that Terence Crawford has vacated the IBF junior welterweight title. Earlier this month, Crawford - who held the WBC, WBO titles - unified the entire division when he knocked out IBF, WBA champion Julius Indongo in three rounds. The fight was showcased as an ESPN televised main event from Lincoln, Nebraska.
Sergey Lipinets isn’t nearly as impressed with Terence Crawford’s demolition of Julius Indongo as most people who witnessed it. Lipinets immediately took to Twitter to dog Indongo following Crawford’s third-round knockout victory Saturday night in Lincoln, Nebraska. Crawford dropped Indongo in the second round and finished off the previously unbeaten Namibian southpaw with a paralyzing, perfect left land to the right side of Indongo’s body in the third round.
