Buddy McGirt interjected during a conference call Monday after listening to several consecutive questions and answers about Mikey Garcia fighting various lightweights and junior welterweights. McGirt, who trains Sergey Lipinets, said, “Excuse me! Excuse me! Can we talk about Mikey and Sergey?”
Sergey Lipinets didn’t want to postpone the biggest fight of his career. The IBF junior welterweight champion was concerned that his title defense against Mikey Garcia wouldn’t be rescheduled if Lipinets asked for some time to let his injured hand heal. Once a California State Athletic Commission doctor examined him, however, the Garcia-Lipinets fight was postponed four weeks, from February 10 to March 10.
Next month, Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) will attempt to become one of the few fighters to capture a world title in a fourth weight class, when he challenges IBF junior welterweight world champion Sergey Lipinets (13-0, 10 KOs). The contest takes place on March 10th at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas.

NEW YORK – Once the initial disappointment subsided, Mikey Garcia realized the one-month postponement of his fight against Sergey Lipinets was for the best. The last thing Garcia would’ve wanted was to beat Lipinets, only have his win degraded due to Lipinets’ injury to his right hand. Lipinets essentially was sparring with one hand before their fight was postponed last week from February 10 to March 10.
Three division world champion Mikey Garcia has a big goal in mind - he wants to take over as the best fighter of this generation, after the recent retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr. On March 10 from the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas - Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) will attempt to capture a world title in a fourth weight class when he takes on unbeaten IBF junior welterweight champion Sergey Lipinets (13-0, 10 KOs), who is making his first title defense.
The last time Mikey Garcia fought, Robert Easter Jr. picked against him. Easter believed Adrien Broner would beat Garcia, though that choice was personal for Easter, too, because Broner is like a brother to him. Garcia beat Broner impressively in their 12-round, 140-pound fight July 29 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and considered facing Easter next.
The highly anticipated showdown between undefeated three-division world champion Mikey Garcia and IBF 140-pound champion Sergey Lipinets has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 10th. The Premier Boxing Champions event was set to take place on February 10th, but Garcia's quest for a fourth world title had to be rescheduled following a training injury to Lipinets' hand. The fight will be live on SHOWTIME and will remain in San Antonio but move to the Freeman Coliseum.
Alex Vaysfeld, Lipinets’ co-manager, told BoxingScene.com on Wednesday that the IBF junior welterweight champion “begged” him to proceed with the Garcia fight February 10 at The Alamodome in San Antonio. But based on the recommendation of Dr. Richard Gluckman, a physician affiliated with the California State Athletic Commission, Lipinets wasn’t permitted to fight Garcia due to current condition of his right hand.
Mikey Garcia will have to wait a little longer for his opportunity to become a world champion in a fourth weight class. According to multiple reports Wednesday, Garcia’s junior welterweight title fight against IBF champion Sergey Lipinets has been postponed because Lipinets has suffered a hand injury during training camp. Lipinets’ injury is considered minor, however, thus their 12-round, 140-pound title fight might not be delayed too long.
