Saunders: If I Don't Beat Canelo - They Don't Have To Pay Me!

Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has yet to finalize his next fight, with September 12 being target - but unlikely to remain as the date of his return.

Canelo has been out of the ring since November of 2019, when he jumped up by two weight divisions and knocked out Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light heavyweight title.

He then dropped the title and made it clear that he was moving back down in weight.

Canelo was initially going to fight in May, as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend, and WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders was a frontrunner to face him.

That entire event was canceled after the coronavirus pandemic erupted in the United States.

Saunders was once again considered when Canelo was looking at September - but there wasn't enough money for the British champion to make that date.

Saunders wants enough time to properly prepare for the fight - and more importantly he wants the right kind of money for a fight of that magnitude.

He's so confident of beating Canelo, that he's willing to stake his entire purse on the outcome.

Plenty of fighters make this type of proposition to talk their way into a deal - but that scenario has rarely, if ever, actually happened.

"I'll tell you the best thing for Canelo to do. Wait until December and come to a proper super middleweight, a proper champion," Saunders told IFL TV, according to Daily Mail. "Wait until December, then let's go. December, we're ready, let's go. Fair, even playing field, no robbery.

'I'll tell you what I'll do – the money I've signed for, keep it. I swear to God, I'll let you keep it. If he wants to come to England I'll let him keep it and I'll fight him for free. If I beat him, pay me what I'm contracted. If I don't, don't pay me. That's how fair I can be. That's how confident I am of beating him."
