Samuel Vargas: record, next fight and profile →
Ortiz, Vargas Scorecard BoxingScene Live - In the main event of this long-awaited comeback, Vergil Ortiz Jr. (15-0, 15 KOs) will defend his WBA Gold Welterweight Title against Samuel Vargas (31-5-2, 14 KOs) in a 12-round bout.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. knows the differences he’s made in the four months since he was originally due to face Samuel Vargas. Whatever adjustments he anticipates his opponent to have made are already factored into the fight night strategy. “I don’t think it will be any different than what I expected in March—which is to not expect him to fight the same as he always does,” Ortiz (15-0, 15KOs) told BoxingScene.com of their rescheduled affair. “I know that I don’t always fight the same against every fighter. I go with the flow and adjust where I have to.”
As a precautionary measure, renowned trainer Robert Garcia will not work the corner for Vergil Ortiz Jr. (15-0, 15 KOs) tonight in his bout against Samuel Vargas (31-5-2, 14 KOs) at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino and live on DAZN. In his place, Vergil Ortiz Sr. will fulfill the role of chief second.
Samuel Vargas understands he is not given much of a chance to defeat Vergil Ortiz tonight at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. That is fine, according to Vargas. The fringe welterweight contender has been through a lot, in and out of the ring. If there is anything that life has taught him, it is to never give up.
Samuel Vargas respects what Vergil Ortiz Jr. has accomplished in his brief career thus far. The Colombian veteran is impressed with the power and overall talent one of the sport’s top prospects has displayed while knocking out each of his 15 pro opponents. Vargas is anxious to find out, though, how Ortiz will react if he is taken deeper into a fight than the sixth round.

The sport’s brightest prospect from the last calendar year is officially set to begin his 2020 campaign. Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Samuel Vargas collide in what marks the first DAZN-USA boxing event to air in nearly five months, as they headline a five-fight bill live from a crowdless Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.
The first show to take place in California in more than four months will now carry one less fight. Mercito Gesta (32-3-3, 17KOs) was forced to withdraw from his scheduled July 24 lightweight clash with San Antonio’s Hector Tanajara (19-0, 5KOs). Their bout was to serve as the evening’s chief support, but was removed after Philippines’ Gesta went down for the count after a battle with food poisoning which began Wednesday evening.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. remained confident that—at some point this year—he could pick up where he and his team left off and move forward with his career. The 2019 Prospect of the Year and rising welterweight enjoyed his have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too moment, when the call came to headline a July 24 show on DAZN. Ortiz (15-0, 15KOs)
