Ismael Salas, head trainer for WBA welterweight Yordenis Ugas, explains that his boxer's slick movement is potentially the key to beating WBC, IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence.
The two champions will clash in a three belt unification this Saturday, April 16 from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event.
Ugas is coming off the biggest win of his pro career.
Back in August, Ugas was a very late replacement when he entered the ring with eight division champion Manny Pacquiao.
The Cuban fighter upset the odds when he outboxed Pacquiao over twelve rounds to secure a unanimous decision victory.
Ugas replaced Spence in that contest. Two weeks before the fight was scheduled to take place, Spence withdrew with a serious eye injury.
That victory has catapulted Ugas to another pay-per-view headliner.
Salas was very pleased with his boxer's performance in training camp.
“This camp has been outstanding. We have been able to prepare in the best way for what is going to be a huge fight, and the biggest fight in the 147-pound division right now. We feel that the preparation that we have had, with no real adversity whatsoever, has been really great," Salas said.
“Ugás is one hundred percent ready for this fight. Mentally we are very strong and we are prepared for any style. Every fighter has a different style and styles make fights. We are comfortable fighting a southpaw. Ugás showed and proved that he can already beat a southpaw in Manny Pacquiao.
“Spence is a warrior. We have two front-footed guys, but the one difference is that Ugás is more of a counter-puncher. Spence is physically amazing, and he’s strong mentally. But he’s never shown that he can move like Ugás.”
