Ryan Garcia, who missed weight – and a chance to win a 140-pound title – floored Devin Haney three times to hand him his first professional defeat in a stunning unanimous decision win Saturday in Brooklyn, New York.

Bernard Hopkins has dismissed the importance of the coming weeks to the ambitions of Golden Boy Promotions. On Saturday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Ryan Garcia – by some distance Golden Boy’s highest-profile fighter – will challenge Devin Haney, the WBC super lightweight champion. He is the significant underdog against his long-term rival, and if, as expected, he loses – albeit against the highest caliber of opponents – he will have done so for the second time in three fights. Two weeks later, Jaime Munguia, Golden Boy’s second-highest-profile fighter, will be the underdog when he challenges Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight title in Las Vegas. Munguia remains undefeated but, like Garcia, in the event of defeat he would be confronted with having to rebuild.

BoxingScene was interviewing Matchroom’s exciting new signing Jarron “Boots” Ennis when the entirely unsurprising news broke that Ryan Garcia was overweight. Friday afternoon’s “weigh-in” at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, where on Saturday Garcia will fight Devin Haney, was another that was “ceremonial.” Both fighters had weighed in behind closed doors earlier in the day.

After watching all of “the madness” that transpired at Friday’s Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney, there was one takeaway. “We’re heading to the finish line,” former 140-pound champion Chris Algieri said from Barclays Center, where he watched Garcia come in a staggering 3.2 points overweight for his second title fight in a year, with unbeaten champion Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) vowing to finish his former amateur rival. In addition to sabotaging his opportunity to wear the belt he has long insisted he’s craved, Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) has participated in one of the most maddening promotions in some time, punctuating it by showing up two hours late for Friday’s ceremonial weigh-in, where he sipped from what he was said was a beer bottle before revealing his overweight figure.

Unbeaten contender Arnold Barboza admits he has stayed ready, waiting in the wings if Ryan Garcia did not make it into the ring against Devin Haney. Barboza was announced as the main event substitute when Haney-Garcia first came to fruition, and it looked at several points over the past few weeks that his services might be called upon. However, Barboza appears set to maintain his spot on the undercard in the co-main, against Ireland’s Sean McComb (18-1, 5 KOs).
