Provodnikov: Alvarado Will Box, But a War Will Break Out!

On October 19th, WBO interim junior welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-1) will defend his title against top contender Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2). The 29-year-old Provodnikov is currently training in Hollywood, CA under the watchful eye of renown trainer Freddie Roach who is also currently training former three-division champion Miguel Cotto for his October 5th fight against Delvin Rodriguez. Provodnikov said that his training camp is coming along perfectly and praised Cotto for his work ethic.

By Robert Morales - Rarely has a fighter gained so much from a defeat the way Ruslan Provodnikov of Russia did in his narrow 12-round decision loss to welterweight champion Timothy Bradley on March 16 at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. In taking Bradley to the limit, Provodnikov lost by scores of 114-113, 114-113 and 115-112. He had Bradley hurt the first two rounds, and also decked Bradley in the 12th round of what turned out to be a Fight of the Year candidate. Bradley showed tremendous heart. But his reputation for that had long been established. Fight fans did not know as much about Provodnikov, but he showed everyone who he was that night. Keep in mind that he moved up in weight for Bradley. Provodnikov looked like he loved every minute of the brutality. It was an eye-popping performance by a fighter who adores his work. Through manager and translator Vadim Gornilov, Provodnikov on Tuesday painted a picture that made sense of his attitude in the ring. "When I was a little kid growing up in a small little village-type town, I was fighting a lot (on the streets)," Provodnikov said to BoxingScene.com via telephone following a Denver news conference formally announcing his challenge to junior welterweight champion Mike Alvarado on Oct. 19 at First Bank Center near Denver (on HBO). "I was fighting a lot for respect, I was fighting a lot because I like to fight, and I used to get punished for it."

Mike Alvarado and Ruslan Provodnikov were very respectful of one another Tuesday during a news conference to officially announce their highly anticipated junior welterweight title fight. Alvarado (34-1, 23 KOs) and Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KOs) are well aware, though, that they’re headed toward a night of inevitable brutality that’ll leave one of them way worse for wear Oct. 19 in Broomfield, Colo., near Alvarado’s native Denver. “I can confidently say that we’re both going to create a war,” Provodnikov said, “and I’m pretty sure that one of us is probably going to remain laying in the ring after the fight.”

DuBoef: Alvarado-Provodnikov Could Resemble Gatti-Ward

On a night when HBO will be premiering a “Legendary Nights” documentary for the famed trilogy between Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward, the live fight accompanying that Oct. 19 broadcast — Mike Alvarado vs. Ruslan Provodnikov — could easily follow suit with similar action, according to Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank. “It’s not going to be too difficult, knowing both of these guys’ styles to come pretty damn close to Gatti-Ward,” duBoef said at an Aug. 13 news conference. “When this match was flirted out there, in today’s social media world, it just became like this chatter that was like ‘Oh my god, those guys?’ It wasn’t long ago that when we called [Banner Promotions’ Artie Pellulo] for Ruslan to fight Timothy Bradley, everybody was like ‘Who’s he? Who is he? Who is he?’ And he showed on that night in the Home Depot Center who he was.

DENVER -- Denver's very own homegrown world champion "Mile High" MIKE ALVARADO will make the first defense of his World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight title a "home game," when he battles No. 1 contender RUSLAN PROVODNIKOV of Russia, Saturday, October 19, at 1STBANK Center in nearby Broomfield, Colo. This marks the area's first world championship fight featuring a local fighter since September 15, 2000 when former World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion Stevie Johnston unsuccessfully challenged defending WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo, via majority draw, at Pepsi Center. As BoxingScene.com reported earlier, Mike Alvarado (34-1) is going to face Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2) on October 19th at the 1st Bank Center in Denver, Colorado. Alvarado's trainer, Shann Vilhauer, admits he wanted an easier fight for his boxer, but he views the hard-punching Provodnikov as the perfect opponent, style-wise, for his boxer. Alvarado is the better boxer, which his trainer believes will be the key to victory.

WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley stopped by this week's edition of BoxingScene Radio to talk to us about a variety of subjects including two upcoming fights that feature fighters that Bradley has recently defeated. On November 23rd Manny Pacquiao faces Brandon Rios in Macau in a fight distributed by HBO pay-per-view. Bradley defeated Pacquiao in June 2012 and feels that Brandon Rios is the perfect opponent for Pacquiao to get back in the winner's circle. "I think that Rios is tailor made for Pacquiao. I think Rios is a good fighter. I loved both of his fights with Alvarado," Bradley explained while comparing Rios to Antonio Margarito.

Vadim Kornilov, manager of Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2, 15KOs), says his boxer will begin training camp in early August for the HBO televised fight with WBO 140-pound interim-champion Mike Alvarado (34-1, 23KOs) on October 19th at the 1stBank Center in Denver. Provodnikov will be training with Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California. Provodnikov nearly knocked out WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley earlier this year, but in the end he lost a very close twelve round decision.
