Arnulfo Obando, trainer of Roman "Chocolatito" González (43-0, 37KOs), says the boxer is not getting a big head after dozens of writers began listing him as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world following the retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Obando began working with Roman in late 2009 when he replaced former coach Gustavo Herrera. He believes the recognition of Roman as the best fighter on the planet is well deserved without any doubt.
The triple world champion will defend his belt on October 17th when he defends his WBC flyweight world title against Brian Viloria at New York's Madison Square Garden.
"I still maintain that Roman can become a four time world champion and become the first to achieve that unique feat [in Nicaragua]. The difference between Roman and the rest is that he has not lost motivation, despite touching the top; but there are others are not champions and they feel that since they did it all [those lose motivation], and without knowing they harm themselves. Roman continues to maintain discipline despite what he is," the trainer explained.
"[Him being the pound for pound best] is not going to change as a person. He knows he is now assuming greater responsibility, we talked about this with the whole team; and he knows he has to prove that he did not become the best in the world by chance, this is not something ephemeral. This story falls at the right time, because what motivates him is the fight against Brian Viloria."
