Rolando Romero appears to be as ambitious as he is brash.
The hard-hitting, cocksure lightweight contender from Las Vegas has big plans for himself, and first on his agenda is to stymie the hype behind divisional rivals Devin Haney, the 135-pound WBC titleholder, and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, who recently picked up the WBA “regular” belt at 140.
“I just want to expose all these f------ phonies,” Romero said on The Porter Way Podcast. “I want to expose every single one of them. After I do that I’ll find a new goal. Right now that’s my goal, exposing every one of these phonies.
“I mean, sh!t, right now there’s Devin and Tank, those are the two that I want to expose right now. That would bring me so much f------ satisfaction to knock them motherf------ out. Just to shut them motherf------- up, all their d!ckriders, all their f------ groupies, just to shut everybody the f--- up, that would be better than anything.”
After his most recent win, a stoppage over Anthony Yigit on July 17, Romero (14-0, 12 KOs) called out Davis to match. Both Romero and Davis (25-0, 24 KOs) fight under the Mayweather Promotions label. Asked who he felt was the bigger “phony” Romero singled out Haney (26-0, 15 KOs).
“I think Devin is much more of a phony,” Romero said. “To me, I get a lot more by knocking out Tank. In my eyes he’s a phony.”
When it was pointed out that Davis’s recent accomplishments were noteworthy and impressive, Romero became a bit coy.
“I know a few things,” Romero said, referring to Davis. “There are things that I’m not saying they’re negative. Just the way I look at it, it’s all f------ fake.”
Still, Romero still gave his props to Davis for overcoming the circumstances of his harsh upbringing – well, sort of.
“I’m very impressed with him,” Romero said. “He comes from a very bad place [in Baltimore]. For him to make it out that’s impressive, you know? He’s obviously not the smartest person, you know? But he had no other option. He might be f------ punch drunk by now. But like I said, you have to admire him because he actually did something.”
