Canelo Alvarez, Rocky Fielding Fight Photos Gallery - Saul "Canelo" Alvarez proved too strong for Rocky Fielding as he delivered a third round TKO on Saturday to easily win their WBA super middleweight title fight at Madison Square Garden. (photos by Ed Mulholland).
By Keith Idec - NEW YORK – Rocky Fielding’s size advantage definitely didn’t matter Saturday night. Canelo Alvarez viciously went after the taller, heavier Fielding’s body and knocked him out in the third round of their super middleweight title fight at a sold-out Madison Square Garden. Alvarez knocked down Fi...
Canelo, Fielding Scorecard BoxingScene LIve - This Saturday night , WBC, WBA Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) will attempt to join a select list of Mexican boxers to become a three-division world champion as he prepares for his 12-round fight against Rocky Fielding (27-1, 15 KOs) for the WBA Super Middleweight World Title. Put aside the title on the line. As long as Callum Smith is active in the super middleweight division, he’s the WBA titlist worth paying attention to. It’s still the debut of Saul Alvarez in a third weight class and he’s fighting a consensus top ten fighter in the class. The road for Fielding to that distinction was traveled pretty much in a night. In August, Fielding went on the road to Germany and summoned the best performance of his career with a fifth round stoppage of undefeated Tyron Zeuge.
Canelo Alvarez (last 12 fights) is selective with his punch output (43.7 per round) and he's accurate, landing 45.7% of his power punches. Canelo's defense is underrated, as opponents landed just 7.4 power shots per round, well below the wgt. class avg. His selective punch output and lateral movement offers opponents fewer opportunities.
Liverpool’s Rocky Fielding (27-1, 15 KOs) is no fool, the 31-year-old knows that he is a big underdog going into his WBA World Super middleweight title defence against Saul Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 early) at Madison Square Garden yet the “Rocky from Stocky” firmly believes that he can upset the odds.
NEW YORK – Rocky Fielding is well aware of the controversies caused by the judging of the two Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin fights. Huge factions of fans and media believe Golovkin did enough to win their initial middleweight title fight in September 2017, when Alvarez moved more than usual and boxed the then-champion to a widely disputed draw. Their 12-round rematch was a more competitive bout, but Alvarez’s majority-decision victory over Golovkin on September 15 generated great debate about the scorecards as well.
NEW YORK – The cut Canelo Alvarez suffered over his left eye during his 12-round rematch against Gennady Golovkin was deep enough and long enough to threaten this quick return to the ring the Mexican superstar sought. Once a plastic surgeon cleared him to train for a fight Saturday night, however, Alvarez was willing to risk that tender skin re-opening during camp. The WBA/WBC middleweight champion pushed back his sparring schedule to help that laceration heal properly, protected it well and seemingly had no issues with it while preparing for his shot at WBA world super middleweight champion Rocky Fielding.
David Lemieux was convinced he’d be Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent. Once Lemieux’s left hook knocked out Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan in the first round September 15, the former IBF middleweight champion assumed he was in perfect position to challenge the Mexican superstar. Alvarez edged Gennady Golovkin to win a majority decision in their rematch that night in Las Vegas and Lemieux, like Alvarez, is promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s company.
NEW YORK – Canelo Alvarez apparently has reconsidered his stance on fighting at 168 pounds again. Two weeks after declaring his fight against Rocky Fielding a singular trip to the super middleweight division, Alvarez seemed more open to a quicker return to 168 pounds when he met with reporters Thursday before a press conference at Madison Square Garden.
