Robert Garcia: record, next fight and profile →
Former champion Brandon Rios, and his trainer Robert Garcia, tell BoxingScene.com that undefeated Chris Algieri is more than capable of outboxing WBO 140-pound titleholder Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16KOs) on June 14th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Algieri's challenge of Provodnikov will be televised in a main event position on HBO.
According to veteran trainer Robert Garcia, former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has not tried to retain his services, contrary to the rumors going around. There were some minor discussions at one point last year. Garcia does stay in contact with Chavez. The two of them are good friends, but there are no talks, at least currently, of having Garcia work his corner.
Trainer Robert Garcia is confident that his fighter, WBA welterweight champion Marcos 'Chino' Maidana, has the perfect style to score an upset victory over heavily favored WBC champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 3rd from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Garcia says Maidana possesses a style that Mayweather has never gone up against in the past and he feels the undefeated boxer will experience difficulties in dealing with Maidana's awkward punching style.
Boxing trainer Robert Garcia, whose stable includes Thomas Dulorme, Mikey Garcia, Evgeny Gradovich, Marcos Maidana and Brandon Rios, among others, spoke with BoxingScene.com on March 28. BoxingScene.com: Who do you think wins the rematch between Pacquiao and Bradley? Garcia: “It’s a pick’em fight. I think this time it’s going to be a lot closer. Timothy Bradley won the first fight — I think Pacquiao won it. I think Pacquiao won it, but this time Bradley’s on a winning streak. Right now Bradley knows that he’s unstoppable. He just beat [Juan Manuel] Marquez and he’s on a winning streak. I think this time’s going to be a lot closer. It’s going to be a fight that I can’t pick the winner right now.”
Robert Garcia, who trains Marcos “Chino” Maidana, spoke with BoxingScene.com on March 28 about Maidana’s upcoming fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 3. BoxingScene.com: This is an obvious question, but what is the difference between preparing for Adrien Broner and preparing for Floyd Mayweather? Garcia: “Look, before the fight, everybody thought and everybody said Adrien Broner was the next Mayweather. Everybody was talking about how Maidana had no chance and Mayweather himself would say that Adrien Broner was the next guy to take over after he got out of boxing. But after the fight, it seemed like everybody changed their mind. ‘Broner was not the same. Broner’s not as good as Mayweather was. Broner has nothing similar to Mayweather.’
David P. Greisman catches up with Robert Garcia, trainer for WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana, to discuss the upcoming unification with undefeated WBC champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. The fight is scheduled for May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with Showtime Pay-Per-View carrying the match.
David P. Greisman catches up with junior welterweight contender Thomas Dulorme, and trainer Robert Garcia, following Dulorme's ten round decision win over previously undefeated Karim Mayfield.
Robert Garcia, trainer of Brandon Rios, spoke with BoxingScene.com on March 28. BoxingScene.com: I know there’d been talk about Brandon Rios facing Ruslan Provodnikov, but there’s been a whole lot of back and forth about whether Brandon can make 140. Garcia: “That’s what it is. Brandon wants the fight. And I know how much Brandon wants it, and I want it for him, too, ‘cause I know he can beat Provodnikov. But for some reason, either Provodnikov’s managers or promoters, Top Rank themselves don’t believe Brandon can make weight. Brandon, when it comes to training, Brandon trains very hard.
Robert Garcia, trainer and brother of 130-pound titleholder Mikey Garcia, spoke with BoxingScene.com on March 28. BoxingScene.com: What’s next for Mikey? Robert Garcia: “We don’t have anything scheduled. We had a meeting with Top Rank. They’re working on a date. We don’t have a date yet. A date and opponent — we don’t have anything. The fight with Gamboa was pretty much not a done deal, but it was close to being done. It looks like that date, Marquez-Alvarado took that date, and now we’re waiting to see what happens.”
Nearly every great fighter in boxing history has suffered a loss. Very few fighters walked away undefeated. Fighters like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones Jr., George Foreman, Sugar Ray Robinson and Marvin Hagler were all perceived to be invincible at certain points of their respective careers. All of them suffered defeats. Trainer Robert Garcia believes the same thing will happen to Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26KOs), stating - "The very best fighters have lost. Leonard lost, Ali lost."
